Tenby entertained Ashburnham B on Saturday, their first Division Three Dyfed League match of the 2014 season. The match turned out to be a very tight tussle on a blustery afternoon, with four of the seven games going to the 18th green. In the top game, Chris Hughes and Ian Thomas were down at halfway, but came back to win one up thanks to fine putts by Thomas on the final two greens. Second out were Darren Thomas and Neil Thomas who performed reasonably but always struggled and lost two down. The third pair of Andrew Cope and Loz Phillips also found their opponents too strong and went down two and one. It was a similar story for Martin Morris and Dai Cope who fought hard but succumbed one down. This meant that with four games finished, Tenby trailed the visitors by three games to one. Fortunately the tail wagged well. Viv John and John Stenson were always in control of their game and ran out three and two winners. Gary McNeilly and Neil Webb's game was tighter and, despite a nervous finish, they were victorious one up. In the final game, Gareth Phillips and the evergreen John Gillespie were comfortable winners by four and two. Thus Tenby defeated Ashburnham B by four games to three. Tomorrow's match is at Haverfordwest who will be fielding a strong side - they have never before been outside Division One of the Dyfed League. Tenby GC is grateful to W. P. Lewis and Son, Vauxhall dealers of Milton, for their kind donation towards the Dyfed League team's expenses and to Dai Cope who has agreed to sell the raffle tickets at the home matches this year.
