Athletic 13 pts. Waunarlwydd Seconds 36
The conditions for this West Wales Premier League game were poor even before the game commenced. Overnight rain and constant showers had affected a pitch which lacked the fine drainage of the main pitch. Waunarlwydd brought to Narberth a physically strong squad of players and in the end the sheer strength told, particularly in the many scrums created by the poor playing conditions.
The game started in wintry showers and from the beginning Waunarlwydd had superiority in the scrums and they initially put the Athletic under a lot of pressure.
However, the Athletic were first on the scoreboard with a penalty by centre James Davies.
Waun came back and spent an extensive period near the Narberth line, in part caused by handling errors in the worsening conditions. This period of pressure resulted in a converted try for Waun after 20 minutes.
Then on 24 minutes, James Davies slotted over another penalty after a Waun infringement.
The Narberth Championship game was called off at 11 o'clock that morning, so 1st XV captain, Steve Martin, offered his services to the Athletic and he scored a typical personal try, converted by James Davies, bringing the score to 13-7.
This was the last time that the Athletic held the lead because on half-time Waun came back and scored a converted try of their own to make the score 14-13 at the break.
The second half saw Waun in the ascendency, with their stronger forwards taking control and the young Athletic pack losing its full scrummaging ability, enabling Waun to score four tries, three of which were unconverted.
Conditions became so difficult that midway through the half the referee insisted on the Athletic having a change of jerseys, donning the white alternative kit - which soon changed colour!
Afterwards, the Athletic man-of-the-match award went to Kyle Keen.
Coach Jason Jennings commented: "It was not a day for a number 10, but he played well. Mention must also be made of flankers Nathan Lloyd and Tom Jones, who never gave up trying."
