What a really nice bunch of chaps the Milford Haven seniors are, it was really nice to see them arriving quite early on the morning of Tuesday, May 7, for our sixth home fixture of the 2013 season. Sixteen of their finest players ventured over the Cleddau Bridge to do battle with Tenby's team of 'more mature' golfers.

Tenby actually prepared for 18 visitors, but circumstances prevented two of the Milford lads from attending - never mind, it gave Tony Ranoe and Bob Creese the chance to play a friendly round and not have to change afterwards. But they did miss a splendid match meal!

The match was played, for the most part, in glorious sunshine and just a strong breeze. Everybody commented on the excellent condition of the course - and in particular the speed and true roll of the greens. Chris and his gang have worked wonders after last year's freak conditions.

You will note, dear reader, that this article contains no photographs of captains shaking hands, hole-in-one scorers jumping for joy or trophies being presented. This week we are on a different tack -prompted by one of the visiting team who, after the match meal, confided in me: "I haven't had faggots and peas that good since I played rugby in the Pembrokeshire League in the 1960s." And he was quite right, the faggots and peas, followed by crusty apple pie and custard, was truly delicious - so the photograph pays homage to the caterers who were collectively responsible for delighting the golfers.

(From left: co-ordinator -Mike Jones; chef - Dave Whittle; The Boss (except for Julie) - Gareth Philips; very tall waitress - Maureen Woodward; and last, but by absolutely no means least - Julie Tudge)

So, full of fine food, the fellows flopped into the bar to hear the two captains; Gwynn French from Milford and our own captain Tony, exchange compliments, pass on some information - and announce the result: Tenby 4.5 Milford Haven 3.5! Milford will have their chance for revenge when we meet again at their course on Thursday, August 8.

Do not forget that those who have booked a place on the Vale trip should be at the Kilgetty rendezvous, with all their kit and a bulging wallet, in time to catch the coach on Tuesday, May 14, at 8.30 am -a day of sporting competition and hedonistic delight will be enjoyed by all!
