GD Harries, Molson Coors, FBM Holidays and Andrew Price sponsored Tenby United got their Division One West campaign underway in dramatic fashion on Saturday when they travelled to their old adversaries Amman United in the first game of the league season. Amman made a quick start and had they not fumbled two would-be certain try-scoring opportunities with some terrible ball handling near the Seasiders' line within the first five minutes, the United would have been forgiven for thinking that they were in for a baptism of fire. The Tenby outfit didn't show any fear of their opponents and with some stern defence from number eight Roy Osborn and wing Jack Guerreiro, along with the huge clearance kicks of Toby Smith and Jonathan Rogers, managed to thwart any early attacks from the home team and cleared their lines and regrouped. Amman drew first blood on six minutes with an easy penalty effort from outside-half Rhys Williams, before Jonathan Rogers evened up the score three minutes later with a well-struck penalty of his own. With both teams settling into their games and looking to move the ball wide, the action went from end to end and was an entertaining affair which thrilled onlookers from both camps, but it was the Tenby threequarters that looked the more dangerous in the early exchanges and with a good spell of pressure through bullocking runs by the centre paring of Jack Price and Mark Heywood, coupled with the blistering pace of fullback Damo Miller and wing Dai Meyrick making inroads into Amman territory on many occasions, only being stopped by some desperate home defence, Tenby might have taken control of the game. The game's first try came when a backs move from the Seasiders was intercepted by Amman winger Dean Williams, who cantered in for the unconverted score. Price soon struck back for Tenby with a well read interception of his own and touched down for the try, which Rogers converted, giving the United the lead by 10 points to eight on the half-hour mark. Amman's Rhys Williams regained their lead a minute later with a dropped goal which, after his side were being smashed back in the tackle every time they tried to reach the Tenby line for a spell of almost 10 minutes, was his only option as his side's attacking play was actually costing them territory thanks to the stern Seasiders defence. The first half ended with the home side narrowly in front by 11 points to 10. The second half had hardly started when a mis timed lofted pass from he Seasiders was intercepted by Amman's open-side flanker, who managed to beat the covering Tenby defence and crossed the whitewash for the try, which Williams converted. Rogers again struck back for the United to narrow the defecit with a fine penalty from out wide. With the rub of the green and the bounce of every ball seeming to go in Amman United's favour, they began to dominate the game for a while and their number seven gathered a Williams chip ahead to touch down in the corner for an unconverted try. Tenby refused to give up, though, and after stringing together phase after phase and securing quick ball each time they broke the home defence down, Toby Smith crashed over for the try, which went without the extra two points, but still narrowed the scoreline to 23-18 in Amman's favour. Amman extended their lead, however, when some unusually poor tackling from Tenby led to an easy try for wing Dean Williams, which was converted by Rhys Williams once again. With seven minutes remaining and the home side seemingly too far ahead for the Seasiders to catch up and get anything out of the game, with the scoreboard reading 37 points to 18, the Tenby side showed that hard work on the training pitch during pre-season and the never-give-up attitude that they have shown so often, pays off, as they mounted an almighty comeback, stunning the home side and almost snatching the win. Tenby's man of the match, flanker Andrew Cooke, crossed for the first try of the comeback after Toby Smith cleverly spotted the defence snoozing and quickly tapped a free kick and sent the powerful young Cooke in for the score, which Rogers effortlessly converted. A minute later, Damo 'Springer Spaniel' Miller gathered the ball deep in Tenby territory and outpaced five or six Amman defenders on his way in for a 60-yard and bonus point earning solo effort, which Rogers again converted with a fine touchline kick. Tenby weren't content to leave it there, though and with just a minute remaining, scrum-half Jonathan Rogers finished a move he had started, and which saw the ball touch almost every pair of United hands, before he regathered and slid in for the try. Rogers stepped up and converted his try and in the process helped earn the well-deserved draw for the Seasiders, who had certainly done themselves and the town proud in not panicking and bringing home three league points from a place where most teams lose their games. This game was the confidence boost that the United needed and they will be looking to go one better tomorrow (Saturday) when they welcome Carmarthen Athletic to Heywood Lane. Kick-off is 2.30 pm and you are all urged to come along and support the boys in their Division One bid. Hoppy's pitchside bar will be open where refreshments will be served.
