Traditionally, the Brooks Cup has been played on Easter Saturday for the last 60-plus years. It is the oldest silver cup played for in the mixed and was presented by Major Brooks and his wife on his retirement from Manorbier Camp in 1949. A full field of 24 couples played on what looked like a beautiful spring day until the cold easterly wind caught you going up the first. Coats and fleeces were quickly put on, even woolly hats, as the pace of play tended to be slow. As the wind strengthened, play became more and more tricky and it was soon obvious that there would be no ground-breaking scores. Just missing out on the prizes with a score of 33 points, were Bev Owen and Barrie Frayne. First time they've played together, so well done you two. In fourth place with the same score were Anne Wilks and Robin Bradbury, another new pairing. Another 33 by Amber and Ian Thomas came in third, pipped by 34 points from Laura McQueen and David Morgan. Laura dropped three shots on Thursday in the Challenge Bowls so did well off her new handicap. However, the winners of the Brooks Cup for 2014 with 35 points were Steve and Pam Cole. Many congratulations to them both. Pam made a lovely speech in which she commented that she had visited new parts of the course, but that Steve had sunk some commendable putts! There was just one two (which was very nearly a very expensive hole-in-one) by Vicky Burks and Rob Hall. Apparently the ball hit the flag on the 17th. Five bag draws were won, by Gillian Roberts and John Ross, John and Irene Gilman, Ros and Paul Jenkins, Andy and Diane Williams, and Nigel Ayers and Julie Lovett, while a raffle run for the two captains' charities by Laura McQueen was won by the ladies' captain, Marion Clarke. Finally Mixed chairman Heather Morgan thanked Richard and Dinah Reed for running the April Friendly Foursomes in her absence. The next one is now on the board to be played on May 2, so don't forget to sign up. The next silverware is the Medal Cup, the Mathias Thomas Foursomes, which is on Sunday, May 25, and will be going on the computer as usual. The GUW Ping Challenge has been drawn against Haverfordwest at Derllys Court. Once the date has been fixed, couples who registered an interest will be contacted for availability. Also, don't forget the Open Week Mixed on June 1. There are just two fourball slots left if you haven't booked yet. Still eight ladies are needed to fill in with visiting gentlemen.
