Whitland 18 pts. Bonymaen 13
At last! After going close against Blackwood the previous week, Whitland finally managed to register only their second victory of the season on Saturday when they overcame visiting Bonymaen.
Despite the win, the Borderers are still firmly entrenched at the bottom of the Championship table, eight points adrift of their closest rivals, but the victory must surely give them a lift for the remaining fixtures of the season.
Building on the confidence gained in their previous outing at Blackwood, when they had shown a distinct inprovement in form, it was Whitland who started the better as they took the game to Bonymaen.
And their early pressure was rewarded when they got the scoreboard ticking over with a try by wing man Tomi Jones.
The touchdown went unconverted, but the early score was just the fillip the Borderers needed in their quest to finally get back to winning ways.
Neverthless, it was the visitors who were next to score when Richard Cunliffe banged over a penalty. But the Bony scrum-half soon turned villain as he was yellow-carded, enabling Scott Newton to stretch Whitland's lead again with the resultant penalty.
And it was outside-half Newton who also bagged the next points as he took advantage of an interception and showed everyone a clean pair of heels to race in for a try.
Again it went unconverted, but it gave the Borderers a useful 10-point cushion at the interval, which they soon added to after the break when second row Kieran White forced his way over for a try from a driving lineout.
It was to be Whitland's last score, though. When home hooker Mark Jones was yellow-carded, Bonymaen took the opportunity to hit back.
First number eight grabbed a pushover a try, which was converted by Cunliffe, and when Cunliffe was also on target with a penalty, the deficit was down to just five points.
It meant for a nerve-jangling last quarter-of-an-hour or so for the Borderers, but determined defence this time kept Bonymaen at bay and it was a delighted Whitland who hung on for a deserved victory.
