Saundersfoot Sports 2

It was Narberth who won a five-goal thriller at a muddy Saundersfoot last Saturday afternoon. The visitors were ahead inside 10 minutes when Narberth player/manager Matthew Price lobbed Ben Evans in the Sports goal.

Shortly afterwards, goalkeeper Evans brought down Price inside the area and Narberth were awarded a penalty. However, Evans saved the spot kick and the rebound from Price.

Prior to half-time, Narberth were awarded another penalty for a handball incident; this time, Tony Evans scored to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break.

The second half was a different story as the home side got back into the game. Firstly, Richard Cope scored via a deflection and inside the final quarter, Sam Coleman fired into the roof of the net to set up an exciting finish.

However, it was Narberth who got the all-important goal, as Calum O'Connell made the most of some uncertainty in the home defence to score the winner.

Narberth: John Durbridge, Dorian Davies, Kyle Quartermaine, Justin Blewitt, Iestyn Scourfield, Ashley Williams, Calum O'Connell, Jordan Williams, Tony Evans, Matthew Price, Morgan Preece. Subs: Toby Lancaster, Richard Henton, Marc Hughes.

Letterston 3rds 3

Narberth 3rds 5

On a cold Saturday afternoon, Narberth's third team travelled to Letterston for this much anticipated top-of-the-table clash, with both teams in good form.

Unfortunately, the away team had forced changes before the kick-off with the elusive Jamie Bates being unavailable at the last minute, so a reshuffle saw Jake Harding come in between the sticks.

This did not seem to dishearten Narberth as they started the game very strongly and totally dominated the opening exchanges with great passing and commitment, with chances being created.

This was finally rewarded when Karl created some space on the right wing to get in a hard, low cross which was met by Jacob Layfield, who calmly sent the defender the wrong way, before dispatching a crisp shot past the helpless 'keeper,

But the hosts were starting to get more into the game and on the stroke of half-time, from all of 30 yards, a great strike hit the inside of the crossbar and bounced in.

The second half started with Narberth playing downhill, but the game was a lot more evenly matched as the home team came more into it.

As Letterston pushed forward, more and more space appeared at the back and a great ball over the top was met by Daffydd Wright, who coolly rounded the 'keeper to give Narberth a 2-1 lead.

To their credit, though, Letterston responded almost immediately, with striker Brian Mathias shrugging off the challenge of Johnny Marson to slot a low drive past the Narberth 'keeper.

The game had a cup tie feel to it, with end to end football, but it was Narberth who appeared to always have the upper hand and this was the case again when Karl Jones cut in from the right to hit a sweet right-foot shot into the far corner, giving the home 'keeper no chance.

Letterston levelled again when they were awarded a free-kick some 35 yards out on the left and filled the box.

It was taken by Brian Mathias, and some free-kick it was, as it flew into the net past an unsighted Jake in goal.

With the game in the balance, it was down to the skipper to show a cool head when a great through ball over the top was met by Karl Jones to round the 'keeper and slot into an empty net to put Narberth 4-3 up.

Narberth made a change, with Jacob Layfield coming off and Tom Walters coming on.

With the final few minutes remaining, the home team were throwing caution to the wind, looking for an equaliser, and pushed their 'keeper up for a corner which Narberth cleared, and when Daffydd picked up the ball, he coolly jinked past the last defender and shot into the empty net from the halfway line, which put the game beyond doubt, much to the elation of his team-mates and travelling fans.

The final whistle was immediately blown, giving Narberth a 5-3 win.

It was a welcome change that a referee was available for the match and he had an excellent game - well done (Andrew Hopkin).
