TENBY Golf Club’s Ladies Section enjoyed a fantastic weekend as the newly formatted Club Championship wrapped up on Sunday 10 August.

This year’s two-day format replaced the old knockout draws, which had struggled for numbers, with a Scratch Silver and Scratch Bronze event played over 36 holes. Around 30% of the Ladies Section signed up, a brilliant turnout that brought plenty of competitive spirit to the course.

Players were split into two divisions: Division 1 (handicap 23 and below) competing for the Club Championship and Scratch Cup, and Division 2 (handicap 23.1+) playing for the Bronze Cup. Both divisions had Gross and Net prizes up for grabs.

Saturday’s opening round was a real test, with strong winds sweeping across the links and making scoring tricky. In the Bronze division, Donna Kenney took an early lead in both gross and net, while in the Silver division Alison Daniel led the gross and Rebecca Naden topped the net.

Sunday brought a complete change in conditions, sunshine, light winds, and those stunning Tenby views.

Players went out in score order, with the higher scores leading off and the leaders teeing off last, adding to the anticipation. There were some great moments out on the course, including Jemma Nand-Lal’s agonising lip-out for eagle on the 10th, plenty of birdies, and of course the odd bunker drama and missed putt to keep everyone on their toes.

By the end of play, the winners were decided. In the Bronze division, Donna Kenney completed a superb weekend by taking both gross and net prizes, with Beth McMann runner-up in both.

In the Silver division, the net prize went to Pam Wareham, while Alison Daniel claimed the gross prize and with it, the title of Ladies Club Champion.

Players rounded off the weekend with a well-earned spread of sandwiches and chips, swapping stories and agreeing that the new format had been a real hit. Judging by the feedback, it’s likely to become a regular feature in the Ladies Section calendar.

And finally, a little bit of history was made. Alison Daniel and Donna Kenney are married, making this the first time in Tenby Golf Club’s history that a married couple has won both division titles in the same year.

Prizes were presented by Lady Captain Penny Cope, with thanks to the Greens Team for a superb course and testing pin positions and to The Links and 19th Hole bar staff for their warm hospitality.
