The Saturday Swingers of Tenby GC embarked on their annual tour to Weston-Super-Mare last weekend.
The party comprised 16 Swingers and this year for the first time they played in Four Ball/Better Ball competitions with different partners each day.
Weston Open Week is shared between the resort’s two clubs - Weston-Super-Mare and Worlebury. On Friday, the venue was the links at Weston. Although there was no heavy rain, a very strong wind gusted off the Bristol Channel.
The greens at Weston were arguably the best that the Swingers had played on this year. Viv John and Neil Webb came in with a very creditable 39 points. Neil Thomas and Owen James plus Simon Evans and Gary McKeown posted a fine 40 points.
Nevertheless, the winners on the day were Richard Ormond and Gethin Evans. They handed in an excellent 41 points, thanks mainly to Gethin’s steady play.
Worlebury is an elevated undulating parkland layout from where there are panoramic rural and sea views. The course was also very well presented. Austin Davies and Dan Cope mustered 42 points.
Viv John and Gary McNeilly were one better with 43 points. The St. Florence pair of Terry Davies and Simon Evans were a shot better again with 44 points.
However, Owen James and Neil Webb put together an outstanding round of 48 points. This won the Swingers’ prize and also second place in the Weston Week event.
On Sunday, the Swingers broke the return journey to Tenby by playing in an Open Day at Mond Valley near Swansea. Unfortunately, due to some torrential rain recently, the flat course which lies adjacent to the River Tawe was rather wet in places.
Three pairs came in with 31 points - Richard Ormond and Phil Keating, Dan Cope and Owen James together with Neil Thomas and Lewis Hurlow.
The best Swingers’ score on the day was 33 points by Mike Anthony and Dai Cope - a reasonable achievement considering the previous two days socialising!
Terry Davies claimed the first two Longest Drives and Viv John the third. Viv also had one of the Nearest the Pins, the others going to Gary McKeown and Neil Thomas.
Only three twos were recorded - by Gethin Evans, Austin Davies and Phil Keating. Gary McNeilly was the only Swinger to successfully complete any of the three challenges, i.e. he birdied the fourth at Worlebury. Lewis Hurlow won the sweep. Indeed, for the first time ever, all Swingers won a prize.
As each Swinger had a new playing partner each day, the overall prizes were based on Swingers individual 54-hole aggregate scores. Terry Davies, Richard Ormond and Neil Thomas shared fifth place with 108 points each. Viv John’s 111 points gave him fourth place.
Simon Evans claimed third spot with 112 points and Neil Webb was runner-up with 116 points.
However, Swingers’ Tour Champion for the second consecutive year with a magnificent total of 119 points was the jovial Owen James. He thoroughly deserved his victory.
Next year, it is likely that the Swingers will return to Ireland for their tour, although the destination and dates are still to be confirmed.
