Tuesday, March 1 - St, David’s Day, also the day that the Seniors were programmed to have a 14-hole ‘Hidden Partners’ competition, followed by lunch and the end of season prize-giving.

First; the competition - sadly, but wisely called off by captain Peter! This was because the rain which was forecast to cease at 08:30 didn’t listen to Carol, so it was still precipitating at 9ish. Consequently, only a few Seniors ventured out to play a few holes - after which the weather improved dramatically - typical!

Second; the lunch, a sumptuous repast of ham, egg and chips, prepared by multi-talented Emma and efficiently served to the 29 assembled veterans by Sue and Gemma -Strong drink was taken, post-mortems were held, and I can safely report that it was a success.

Third; the prize giving - much more to digest here. We were favoured by the presence of the club president, Russell Clarke, who is still recuperating but looking much more like his old self - and by a visit from ex-secretary Jeff Bamfield, who just dropped in to have a game and celebrate St. David’s Day - well 50 per cent isn’t too bad Jeff!

The busiest chap by far was our competition secretary, Jim Martin. Jim had to collect, collate and confirm all the data from the season to ensure that the right person won the proper prize with the correct score - and there were five competitions to take into account! I shall attempt to give you a synopsis of these results, accompanied by some photographs of the successful competitors.

Starting with the Seniors Order of Merit, which is awarded for the best six round score of the season. There are two categories, the under 75-year-olds strive for the Clifton John Memorial Trophy, while the over 75-year-olds stagger round chasing the Ken Gouldsbrough Trophy.

And the winners were - in the first category - 3rd with 219 points, Stan Hudson, 2nd with 220 points, Derek Cole and the winner with 221 points, Alan Jones. In the second category - 3rd with 176 points, Mike Fox, 2nd with 177 points, Rod Clarke and the winner with 182 points, Bob Wiseman.

Next, the Winter Eclectic Gross competition, where the Des Stone Trophy is awarded to the player with the lowest number of strokes per hole over the season. This year the best of the bunch were: In 3rd place on 65 strokes - Alan Jones, in 2nd place with 64 strokes - Allen Watts, and the winner with a remarkable 62 points - Jim Moffatt.

Finally, the Winter Eclectic Competition where the the highest Stableford score on each hole over the season counts. There are two categories, the under 75-year-olds compete for the Tenby Seniors Cup, donated by Dudley Williams, while the over 75-year-olds battle it out for the Colin Griffith Trophy.

After many months of effort, the winners were: In category 1, 3rd with 55 points - Jim Martin, 2nd with 58 points - Paul Bradley, and winning with 58 points, on countback - Derek Cole. In category 2, 3rd with 55 points - Newman Vincent, 2nd with 57 points - Dudley Williams and winning with 57 points, on countback - Ron Murphy.

And that’s that for another season.

Next Tuesday we play Glynhir seniors here on the Tenby links, and thereafter we are committed to a full programme of home and away matches, away days and tours. It’s a hard life - but somebody has to do it!
