The most memorable event on Tuesday, May 23, had nothing to do with a golf tournament. Captain Dudley, properly and reverently, called on the Tenby and Fairwood teams to observe a minute’s silence to show sympathy and support to the dead, wounded and bereaved Mancunians who suffered the vile and disgusting atrocity on the preceding Monday. The respect and support shown by the entire nation is heartwarming - I am sure we must all be proud to be British at this time.

I don’t have the heart to produce a witty and humorous report of the match, but in the spirit of the people of Manchester, we must not let the barbarians win by allowing them to change our way of life.

Sixteen Seniors from Fairwood Park had travelled to Tenby, aiming to win this match, and 16 Tenby Seniors were lined up to prevent that happening! Inside this bubble of competition there was a friendly and cordial meeting between teams that have been competing for many years -banter and humour was the order of the day, the desire for victory was very much less important. So, as they say, the match was played in fine spirit, on a day that was cloudy without rain, breezy without wind and warm without a chance of sunburn.

When the eight matches were completed, both teams enjoyed one of Lee’s forays into Italian cuisine - the lasagne was bella! We were served by our two Emmas, who were, as ever, bellisima. The charity raffle? - not so good, four prizes - one to Tenby, three to Fairwood Park - boo! The result of the match? Tenby 5.5, Fairwood Park 2.5 - hurrah! The Tenby surge goes on unabated - can we conquer Glynhir on Wednesday June 7? - you betcha!

The photograph shows Fairwood Park Seniors captain David Frame vowing to wreak vengeance on captain Dudley when we next meet on September 9, we shall see!
