The 2023 AJO Memorial was held on consecutive Saturdays recently, with members of Tenby and Trefloyne Golf Clubs eligible to enter either or both of the legs.

The late Arthur Ormond MBE was Captain, President and a Life Member at Tenby GC. He was Managing Editor of the Tenby Observer and also enjoyed playing at Trefloyne GC.

AJO Bowl - Men, The first leg was held on the parkland layoutat Trefloyne. The course was very well presented but the morning rain did little to soften the fairways and greens.

As usual, the leading scores were dominated by home members –eight out of the top 10. There were 21 scores of 30pts or better.

The best cards were Jack Lawrence – 38pts and Derek Gamble, Aaron Roberts plusRay Young – all 37pts.

Tenby’s leading score was John Broomhead’s 34pts.The following Saturday, on the famous links at Tenby, it was glorious sunshine all day long.

Due to recent hot weather, the thick rough is beginning to die back and consequently there were 49 scores of 30pts or more.

As expected, Tenby members claimed most of the best scores. However, Trefloyne’s Darren Hodgeson was top of the tree with a fine 41pts.

Paul Haley, Darren Thomas and Mark Edwards all recorded 40pts. Barrie Frayne and John Broomhead posted 39pts.

Aaron Roberts, a member of Trefloyne’s greens staff, matched his first leg score of 37pts. Consequently, his 36 hole aggregate of 74pts crowned him the AJO Memorial Winner for 2023 beating Tenby’s John Broomhead by just a single point.

Unfortunately, both of the individual leg winners played just one round i.e. Jack Lawrence did not play at Tenby and Darren Hodgeson did not enter at Trefloyne.

Tenby Observer Cup - This is awarded to the male with the best “gross” two round total. Scores are calculated by deducting playing handicaps from the Stableford totals.

Sadly, John Broomhead missed out on silverware again. His aggregate of 59pts was the same as his friend Gavin Scotcher who claimed the TO Cup again by virtue of better second round in Tenby.

AJO Bowl – Ladies, This year’s entries were very disappointing. Only six women played at Trefloyne –all home members and none from Tenby.

The scoring was good with Marion Payne coming out on top with 36pts.

At Tenby 11 scores were recorded, the best being 36pts by the home club’s Gill John.

The 2023 Winner of the Ladies AJO Bowl is Trefloyne’s Lynne Campbell totalled and excellent 69pts over the two rounds.
