Swansea City manager Russell Martin hailed ‘the Tenby Messi’ after striker Liam Cullen shone with a goal and an assist in his side’s 4-0 victory over Watford on Friday night.
The hosts ended their eight-game winless streak in style with Cullen, who shone in his first league start in 16 months, playing a pivotal role in the opening goal as Joel Piroe drilled low into the far corner.
Cullen then swept in his third goal in three games, before Piroe guided in from 20 yards, with a far-post effort from Joel Latibeaudiere making it four.
Twenty-four-year-old Cullen, an academy product from Kilgetty has had to be patient this season, with a shoulder injury playing a part in limiting his game time.
But head coach Martin said the forward’s effort and commitment to the club he has supported since childhood has never been in doubt, and he is delighted to see him contributing.
“The Tenby Messi has been incredible, that’s what someone has started calling him,” said Martin in his post match press conference on Cullen, who was awarded 'man of the match'.
“He has been great, it has not been an easy journey for him. He has been patient, he has persevered and he deserved the chance to be on the pitch because he has made an impact in the last couple of games.
“He is all-in every day, he trains so hard and he leaves nothing on the pitch. He gives us everything he has got.
“That is important, especially in these moments where it has been a bit difficult and a bit tough.
“He is someone who is willing to go through a bit of pain for you, it has been a bit stop-start for him since we have been here.
“He went out on loan last season, but guys like him, Ollie Cooper, Ben Cabango and Joe Allen have something special because they have come through the academy and they really care about the club.
“Culls cares as much as anyone I have ever seen, and Joel Piroe even said to me this week that he thinks Liam Cullen is good for him.
“I think you can see and understand why. They have a nice connection and hopefully that can build.
“Culls could not have done any more to his chance. He is so willing to run, which is important for us.
“He got a goal and an assist, he has been desperate for his career to kickstart at the club he loves and supports and it is down to him now,” he added.
