The sun shone down on the large crowd of players and supporters who turned up to remember Phil and support his mum, Alison, in raising funds for the Mental Health Charity MIND, writes Sharron Hardwick
MIND representatives attending said: “In the three years we’ve known Alison, she’s become such an important part of the MIND family.
Lydia Salerno, office manager, and Joe Salerno, resources centre manager, both said: “We are hugely thankful for all she does for us. Alison’s amazing efforts have not only raised lots of funds, but her enthusiasm has made her an ambassador for MIND, spreading the word and gaining more support.”
Philip (Phil) Yates passed away on August 14, 2015 due to depression and had only been ill for a very short time.
Alison hopes that the funds raised for MIND will help others to get the help they need.
Phil loved playing football and was part of both Tenby and Kilgetty football clubs in his younger years.
Playing at the Memorial Charity Match Phil’s teammate and friend Chris Lee said: “I met Phil in a Tenby based tournament and we then played together for Tenby AFC.
“He was such a friendly boy, always reliable. He will be smiling down on us and be so proud of what his mum has done organising the match today.”
The game kicked-off in the hot weather, players played with determination and pride in memory of their dear friend Phil.
Tenby clinched it with a goal five minutes from the final whistle.
The full time score was 3-2 but the real winners were Alison, the teams, and all involved.
Alison shared: “I am so thankful to all who supported this Memorial Charity Football Match.
“I especially thank Phil’s team mates from Kilgetty and Tenby, all who helped to organise the teams and activities on the day, all who made cakes, donated fabulous prizes, the football, the trophy and awards. Thanks to you all.”
Donations are still coming in and the total raised from the Fairtrade refreshments, cake stall and raffle, the signed Swansea City Shirt which went up for auction, will be announced soon.
The online just giving page has already raised £600 and is still open for further donations.
“If you could not make it on the day - please can you give a little to this worthwhile cause on our Just Giving page - We couldn’t save my son but perhaps we can save others.” added Alison.
