Last Saturday, the visitors to Sutton Street were Whitland Bowling Club to play their First Division league fixture against the Five Arches team. The Arches were expecting this to be a very tough game, and so it turned out, with Whitland winning on three rinks to bag 12 points to the Arches' two points, thanks to Steve Williams's rink who saw off the challenge of the Whitland captain's rink by 24 shots to 16. Although defeated by an overall shot count of 22 shots, this was a much-improved performance by the Arches who have been in a poor run of form in recent games. With the selectors making several positional changes across the rinks, the team responded with three rinks very much in with a chance of winning their games. Gerald's rink, on rink one, were in a real battle with the Steve Rees four. By the 14th end there was only one shot separating the teams, but the Whitland four finished the stronger, picking up nine shots to the Arches' three, which saw them victors by 20 shots to 13. On rink two, the Steve Williams four had a fine win against Glyndwr Thomas and his men At the 14th end, the Whitland rink were leading by 11 shots to 10, but from then on the Arches four went into overdrive, picking up 14 shots to Whitland's five, to bag two much-needed points. Rink four saw Jonno, skipping for the first time this season, up against Liam Price and his men. Although Alex Watt was back from the North Sea oil rigs to don his Arches shirt, the home rink found themselves struggling to get into the game, as Liam Price, in great form, steered his rink to a 33 shots to 11 win. Ashley and his rink were drawn against Colin Wynn and his crew on rink five. This was a game the Arches four let get away from them. Well in the game at 10 ends, they ended up losing by one shot, 23 to 22 shots. Rink scores (Arches first, Whitland skips only): Gerald Hewitt, Neil Dickinson, Steve Davies and John Rees 13; Steve Rees 20. Steve Williams, Tony Powling, Kevin Lewis and Roger Thomas 24; Glyndwr Thomas 16. John Hubbard, Alex Watt, Steve Sheldon and Harold Ebdon 11; Liam Price 33. Ashley Hooper, Dai Spencer, Ben Cloake and Ken Lloyd 22; Colin Wynn 23.

Five Arches ship Gerald Hewitt (out of picture) and his rink of John Rees, Steve Davies and Neil Dickinson had a close encounter with Steve Reese, of Whitland (seen left), in last Saturday’s match. Alongside them, though, was the team’s only winning rink, two of whom, Kevin Lewis and Tony Powling, are seen studying the head on the right.
