With Tenby being the oldest affiliated golf club in Wales, our mixed cup events are a time when we can bask in the history of such a prestigious club. On Sunday, on a glorious summer's day, we enjoyed a competition started in 1972 by Mrs. Kathleen Usher. She presented the trophy in memory of her husband, Walter, who had died prematurely at the age of 60.

The course was in beautiful condition, a true links course, with burned fairways and wispy rough. Even though one thought scoring should be easy in these conditions, it proved to be tricky for most of us, though there were some superb scores entered by some. However, no twos were recorded.

Due to the excellent turnout, we had four prizes to award. Just getting the fourth prize with their amazing 25 points on the back nine were Georgina and Richard Ormond with 39 points.

Rebecca Naden and Paul Bradley came in with 40 points to take third prize, Rebecca having to stand the other side of the camera for a change!

Leaders in the clubhouse for most of the afternoon were that strong pairing of Sarah Waring and Idwal David with 41 points. But they were pushed into second place when the last card came in from Helen and Chris Hughes. Yes, they had done it again with 47 points, a fantastic card and a fantastic result. Well done.

Our bag draws are often the last hope for those that haven't been in the prizes. They were drawn by vice-captain Tony Key. These couples won back their entry fee: Sarah and Idwal, Amber and Ian Thomas, and Sue Shooter and David Blackmore.

Thanks must go to chef Dave and bar man Matt for looking after us so well in the clubhouse after the game; also to Irene Gilman for doing the cards, and to Ben in the Pro Shop for getting us all out. A final thank you to Neil Lovatt who went out to mark a card for his partners as his playing partner had to drop out of the competition with a broken bone in her shoulder.

The next mixed event is the Friendly Foursomes today (Friday) at 4 pm. These are played over 14 holes with supper and a drink afterwards. We would love to see some newcomers, so why not be brave and take the plunge! If you cannot make this one there is another on Friday, August 9, so put that in your diary?

Also the next silverware is the Morgan Tucker Greensomes Trophy on Sunday, August 18, so watch for that one on your computers.

Last of all, on Monday, July 22, the next round of the Ping is to be played at Haverfordwest Golf Club against a very strong Carmarthen side. We wish the team all the best in that as a win will take them to the finals in the Vale of Llangollen on Monday, October 7.

H.K.M.
