Ammanford 48 pts.
Tenby United 5
Despite dominating territory and pinning their high-flying opponents in their 22 for much of the first half, the extremely undermanned GD Harries, FBM Holidays, Molson Coors and Andrew Price sponsored Tenby outfit struggled to turn pressure into points against a full-strength and talented Ammanford side.
With 11 squad members absent due to injury, illness or being on Llanelli duty, the Seasiders made a solid start, with Tom Lewis using his boot to put the ball deep into Ammanford territory and the pack managed to pin them in for long periods.
It certainly would have been a different game if the visitors had managed to hold on to the ball for one more phase during each attack, but there was always a pass not going to hand or a dropped ball thwarting their relentless attacks on the line and preventing pressure turning to points.
After one such Lewis kick ahead was chased and pounced on by centre Jack Guerreiro and quickly moved to his hard-running partner Toby Smith, the score looked inevitable for Tenby, but after Smith was brought down short, the Ammanford pack somehow managed to come away with the ball and after being helped by a couple of missed tackles they found themselves seven-nil up after crossing the Seasiders' line for a converted try, which went totally against the run of play.
Within five minutes, United had struck back after good work from the pack.
Number eight Rob Weston went on the charge and drew the defence before unleashing veteran winger Dai Meyrick out wide.
Meyrick still had a lot of work to do, but managed to go around the last two defenders and crashed over in the corner for the unconverted try.
Unfortunately, Meyrick sustained an injury in the process of scoring and after bravely trying to battle on, his injury forced him to leave the field and he was replaced by Andrew Cooke, who usually plays at blindside flanker.
Shortly after, it was Ammanford on the attack and, despite not having their line breached, the Seasiders were dealt another blow when second row Wyndham Williams was given a yellow card after saving what would otherwise have been a certain try for the home side.
Ammanford's outside-half landed the penalty to give his side a 10-5 lead.
This remained the score for the rest of the first half and the Tenby side were certainly in the game going into the interval.
The second half was pretty much one-way traffic, with the Seasiders' brave defence being outstretched by the young and slick Ammanford side's constant attacks.
Despite some stern tackling from all of the Tenby side, the home team managed to take advantage of the fact that many Seasiders were playing out of position.
The Ammanford outfit ran in six second half tries, with four of them being converted, to give the hosts the bonus point win, but the scoreline of 48 points to five didn't reflect the effort that Tenby put in from the first to the last minute of the game.
Congratulations go to youth team flanker Alex Thomas on coming off the bench to make his 1st XV debut and good luck goes to Seasiders back rower Patrick Roberts who left on Saturday to cross the Atlantic to play in San Diego. The club wish him well on his adventure.
Tenby look forward to welcoming their old adversaries Amman United to Heywood Lane tomorrow (Saturday) at 2.30 pm and will look to get back into their stride with the home crowd behind them.
