Most locals with an interest in sport know the name Oliver Simon following his success in local triathlons over the years.
Last year, Olly took the big step on to the world stage. Having secured his Pro licence, Olly competed in three Ironman events in one season! Coming out of the water first during Wales Ironman and finishing sixth overall at Ironman UK held at Bolton, Olly's introduction to the big events has been more than impressive.
Competing whilst in full time employment and racing against other Pros who are being paid to train and race is no easy feat. It's no easier to find a major sponsor, especially in these challenging economic times.
With the support of his fiancée Sarah, Olly took the brave decision to take a year out from full-time employment to concentrate on his training, in search of the results that may attract that sponsor. To be seen by such a sponsor means travelling the length of the country to compete in the right events.
Some of the bigger events offering greater publicity are abroad and recently Olly travelled to Lanzarote to compete in his first Ironman of the year. Extremely hot conditions faced the competitors and the experience has been valuable in preparation for the long season ahead.
All of this, however, comes at a cost. Olly has had to rely on income from part-time work and coaching to fund his entry fees and travel costs. The membership of Tenby Aces have put their hands in their pockets and raised £1,000 to help towards supporting Olly during 2012.
The Aces are inviting other clubs and the Pembrokeshire community to join them in supporting this talented athlete and give him the opportunity to be noticed and his achievements be recognised.
If you are a club, business or individual that would like to help Olly's campaign, you can contact Aces club president, Gareth Rees on 07792 161569 or via email at [email protected]">[email protected] They'd love to hear from you!
