With Neyland’s match at Narberth eventually being abandoned due to rain, Haverfordwest took the opportunity to keep the pressure on at the top of division one with a comfortable 69-run victory at Whitland.
Batting first, the Town amassed a healthy total of 200 for 8, with Simon Holliday leading the way with an impressive 95 and Dan Cole chipping in with 31.
Iestyn Scourfield with 3 for 34 and Mark Lee with 2 for 38 were the pick of the Whitland bowlers as the home attack struggled to contain the Haverfordwest batsmen.
Scourfield also had a tidy knock of 22, but apart from that, none of the Whitland batsmen got going as they were skittled for 131.
Adam James claimed four wickets at a cost of 46 and Keiran O’Connor 3 for 24 as the Harrison Bowl winners picked up 30 points to close the gap at the top to just 21.
Neyland did manage to collect nine points of their own in their match at Narberth, where they were frustrated by the miserable weather.
Having posted a total of 198 for 7, thanks mainly to Scott John with 51 and Ashley Sutton with 23, they saw Narberth struggle to reach 53 for 3 before the umpires called a halt to proceedings.
It was a similar story for Cresselly at Llanrhian, where Matthew Morgan with 83, Adam Chandler with 63 and Sam Harts with 37 helped take the visitors to a more than useful total of 229 for 8.
Harts also took a couple of early Llanrhian wickets at a cost of just 14 runs, before the match was abandoned with the home side on 20 for 2.
The weather also intervened at St. Ishmaels where things were boiling up nicely in the game against Lawrenny.
The Tish batsmen had been in excellent form as they raced to a total of 259 for 5, Andrew Williams top scoring with 57, followed by Andrew Palmer with an unbeaten half century, Dan Howells 45 and Peter Bradshaw 41.
Brad McDermott was the pick of the Lawrenny bowlers with 2 for 43, while Rob Williams bagged 1 for 38.
In response, Lawrenny were also going along at a tidy rate, with Harry Thomas smashing a fine 56, but they were forced to leave the field with their score at 103 for 3 and that was the end of that.
No such problems at Johnston, where Carew enjoyed a fine six-wicket win.
Struggling Johnston must have thought they were in with a shout as they racked up 209 for 8, thanks mainly to Daniel Sutton with 66, while Steve Mills weighed in with 36 and Lee Summons 29.
James Hinchliffe snared four wickets for Carew and Max Brindley and Tom Davies two apiece.
Davies also impressed with the bat with an excellent 59, while Tom Scourfield with 63 and Nick Scourfield with 52 also made major contributions as Carew got home with six wickets to spare.
There was something of a surprise in division two, where league leaders Kilgetty suffered a shock defeat at the hands of relegation threatened Cresselly Seconds.
Taking first knock, Cresselly piled up a formidable total of 254 for 2, with Mike Shaw the star performer as he smashed a superb 106, with Richard Harries not far behind as he just missed out on a century, remaining unbeaten on 99 when the innings closed.
Mike Shaw also did the business with the ball as Kilgetty made a good fist of the run chase, with Kyle Marsh hitting 47, Jack Tough 41 and Kurtis Marsh 38, but Shaw’s 5 for 37 and Steffan Jenkins’s 2 for 37 eventually saw them all out for 220.
On a brighter note for Kilgetty, though, they still remain top of the table as Pembroke also had an off day and blew their chance of taking over pole position.
Entertaining Burton, they saw the visitors rack up a total of 205 for 4, James Venables top scoring with 77 and Toby Hayman adding 37.
Jonathan Rogers, Jack Harries and Sam Davies all picked up a wicket apiece, but at a cost of over 40 runs each.
Replying, Pembroke saw wickets falling at regular intervals, with only Phil Hay with 37 offering any resistance as they were bundled out for just 79, Morgan Scale being their main tormentor with figures of 4 for 39.
As a result of their 30-point haul Burton move into contention at the top, while Carew Seconds must have been cursing their luck as the weather denied them a chance of significantly closing the gap on the leaders.
Chasing a Hook total of 219 for 6, the villagers looked nicely poised for victory at 193 for 5 when the match had to be abandoned.
Ceri Brace led the charge with 75, while Hayden Chapcott and Dai Rees contributed 32 and 25, respectively, but their efforts were in vain.
Earlier Jake Wickes had starred for Hook with a superb unbeaten 112, while Ceri Brace showed his all round talents by picking up a couple of wickets for Carew.
Runs were in short supply in the remaining two matches in the division, with Stackpole making short work of passing Llangwm’s total of 48, losing only one wicket in the process, while Haverfordwest Seconds lost one more in chasing down the 68 scored by Whitland Seconds.
Saundersfoot maintained their push for promotion from division three with a comfortable away victory against bottom team Hook Seconds.
The home team were bundled out for just 101 thanks to the efforts of a lively Saundersfoot attack, with Danny Caine bagging 5 for 6 in an impressive spell and Sam Franklin picking up two wickets for just 19 runs.
Franklin was also in form with the bat, top scoring with 41 not out, while Tom Mansbridge and Paul Mansbridge added 31 not out and 22, respectively, as the Seasiders romped home by nine wickets to consolidate their position at the top of the table.
Haverfordwest Thirds are chasing them hard, however, after collecting a 30-point haul with a 142-run victory at Crymych, while Llechryd, who are also in the mix at the top, slipped up away to Neyland Seconds.
There was a high-scoring game at Herbrandston, where the home side piled up a total of 220 for 2, with Jack Nicholas smashing an unbeaten 106, but it was not good enough as Lamphey passed it also for the loss of just two wickets, main contributors being Joe Kidney with 60 ad Steve Lewis with 55.
The Lawrenny Seconds match against Pembroke Dock was another which fell victim of the weather.
Saundersfoot Seconds, meanwhile, could not emulate their first team in their division four match against league leaders Johnston, going down by six wickets.
They managed to post a useful total of 172, thanks to the efforts of Yannik Parker 43, Steve Cook 40 and Chris Hawkes 37, but an unbeaten 63 by Steve James and 52 from Ross Dewstone, to add to his bowling spell of 4 for 36, helped steer the visitors home to victory.
Carew Thirds crashed to a heavy defeat at home to Llanrhian Seconds, being skittled for 30 when chasing the visitors total of 191 for 5, while Pembroke Seconds suffered a similar fate away at Burton Seconds as they slumped to 96 all out in reply to their opponents’ 222 for 8.
Only two games were played in division five, with Stackpole Seconds winning a low scoring match against Llangwm Seconds by four wickets and Neyland Seconds defeating Haverfordwest Fourths by six wickets.
