September brings the Autumn Classics to horse racing and bowls - with the Pairs tournament at Tenby Bowling Club standing shoulder to shoulder with the St. Leger at Doncaster.
This year’s tournament at Sutton Street - generously sponsored once more by Valero, with our thanks - brought a classic Tenby vs Valleys Raiders final, with the visitors - Cory Davies and Nathan Rees of Thomastown - pipping locals Peter Day and Paul Diment in the final to take the prizemoney and Valero trophies out of the county.
It is the first time that the pair have won the trophy, and they played consistently throughout the day to get to the knockout stages and come out on top.
The Valero Pairs always attracts a strong line-up from far afield to Sutton Street to take on the local pairings, but at one stage an all-Tenby final looked on the cards.
However, the pairings of Rhys Day and ancestral Shark Finley Williamson, plus father and son Kieran and Dion Peregrine fell in the semi-finals on a long day of bowls and friendship.
The annual staging of the competition brings down the curtain on another successful season for Tenby at Sutton Street.
The Sharks retained their county league title; the Five Arches team added to the silverware by lifting the Brains Cup; Michael Jackson and now 50 times capped John Roberts set new standards by becoming GB pairs champions; and Welsh international Ysie White confirmed her status in the sport by winning the Welsh singles title.
All in all, plenty to be proud of again as the Club begins to put the green to bed for the winter months.
For many players, attention now turns to the start of the indoor season at Heatherton where hopes will be high for indoor success to match that achieved outside.
