Saundersfoot 96 Pembroke Dock 67: Saundersfoot completed their matches at the group stage of this year’s Carruthers Shield Welsh Cup competition with a convincing victory at home to Pembroke Dock last Saturday.
Neyland and Milford Haven having been beaten previously, winning all three of their games means that the club now qualify for the knockout stages which will begin with home advantage to Ammanford Park on Saturday, June 16.
On a bright and sunny afternoon, the villagers soon took command on the fast green and were 20 shots in front after just five ends with the lead having been extended to 25 at the half-way mark.
Afterwards, although the Dockers rallied to make it a more even second period of the game, the overall result was never in doubt, giving a comfortable 29-shot win.
On rink two, Alan Brain led for skip Joe Dennis with Selwyn Price and son Louis at number three and were involved in a tight encounter against the visiting four skipped by the Dock captain Hugh Williams. Although even falling behind with eight ends remaining, it was the home boys who eventually won by 18 shots to 15.
Steve Dick skipped Donny Poole, Mackie Brace and Paul Blayney on rink three against Tudor Harries, Alistair Benn, Huw Colley and Dave Halward. Having taken an early lead, with Donny consistently peppering the jack, the village four were always in control and gained success by twenty eight shots to fourteen.
Rink four saw Saundersfoot captain Berwyn Dennis skip Dai Davies, Richard Whittaker and Liam Price, making his debut for the club, against the Richard Hissey four and here too the villagers led throughout, gaining a win by 28 shots to 10.
Graham Hughes, Neil Hensman, Brian Desmond and Myrddin Dennis played Richard Jones on rink five and although leading at the 16th end mark, conceded two counts in the latter stages to eventually lose by 28 shots to 22.
The team now revert to league action for a few weeks, starting with a home match against newly-promoted St. Kaths next Wednesday at 6 pm.
ST. ISSELL’S 93 (12 pts.) WARRIORS 60 (2)
The St. Issell’s men played a second division match at home to Warriors, of Pembroke Dock, last Sunday and gained a notable victory by 33 shots.
Three out of the four rinks picked up wins, giving them 12 of the 14 points being played for and resulting in a big grin on the face of captain Alan Rich!
Rink scores with St. Issell’s first and Warriors skips only were:
Peter Williams, Dai Davies, Mike Carr, Mike Ashbridge 26 Tony Hancock 11.
Nev Ruff, Barrie Lee, John Amos, Alan Rich 25 M. Hyde 11.
George Cavell, Mike Oliver, David Walters, Rod Bramhall 22 Dave Asparassa 16.
Billy Glynn, Peter Guyett, Dennis Ball, Richard Whittaker 20 D. Morgan 22.
Prior to the game, Bob Storey suffered a fall on his way into the clubhouse and was unable to play.
Firstly, members wish him a speedy recovery and secondly would like to thank Dai Davies for stepping in at 15 minutes notice!
Due to Haverfordwest Castle having dropped out of the league, next Sunday’s scheduled match against them will not now take place and so the next fixture for the St. Issell’s boys will be at home to St. Thomas on Sunday, June 10.
LADIES OPEN TRIPLES
The Saundersfoot ladies open two wood triples competition will be taking place on Friday, June 1, and entries can be given to Kath Blayney.
