With the bowling green finally open and fit for play, it was the ladies teams who got the competitive home games underway last weekend.

First up on Saturday were the St. Issell’s girls who had a real thriller against Whitland ladies. This was always likely to be a close affair between the teams who finished first and second last season and so it proved.

On rink one, Kath Blayney, Christine Ball, Sue Roden and Ann Lewis were up against the mother and daughter pairings of Sophia and Tracey Hollins and Katie and Andrea Thomas. Finding themselves five shots adrift with a few ends to go, the home team fought back, with the match ending honours even at 21 shots all.

On rink two, skip Shirley Cox had Lynne Reyed, Sue Dooley and captain Chris Harris as her front three against Whitland’s Kathy Jenner, Chloe Thomas, Sue Evans and Cally Jones. With one end left to play and St. Issell’s leading by two, the away girls were holding two for a draw until Shirley drew the shot to ensure a victory by 21 shots to 18.

A great start then for the team, picking up five of the six points and their next game is against Pendine at home on Friday, May 4.

On Sunday, it was the turn of the Saundersfoot ladies who hosted Tasker, of Haverfordwest, and they too commenced their campaign in style, winning the game and going one better, gaining all six points.

Di Disney, Marion Evans, Alwen Hughes and skip Steph Amos defeated the Win Howells rink by 25 shots to 10, whilst Joyce Howe, Pam Bowen, Viv Edwards and Lorna Campbell had a win over the Mandy Lewis four by 18 shots to 12.

Their next game is next Wednesday away to Whitland.

MEN’S FRIENDLY MATCH

Saundersfoot entertained Whitland last weekend in a pre-season friendly, with the visitors winning the match, which was a good practice before the leagues get underway tomorrow (Saturday).

Compliments were made about the bowling surface which was in excellent condition, particularly after the rainy winter, and was testimony to all the hard work that had been done pre-season.

Following the match, all the players (the men from the friendly and the ladies from their league game) enjoyed pork rolls and potatoes prepared by the ladies of the club whilst enjoying a convivial hour catching up with their winter activities and hopes for the outdoor season.

This weekend, the Saundersfoot First Division team get underway tomorrow (Saturday) with a home match against Pendine and on Sunday, the St. Issell’s boys play host to Fishguard and Goodwick, with both games commencing at 2 pm.

PRO-AM NIGHT

On Friday, May 11, the club will be holding a pro-am evening, with regular club players partnering a novice in a fun competition.

It is hoped that members will find a partner, new to the game, to play with and hopefully introduce them to the sport.

This is the first time that the club has held such an event and it is the brainchild of Graham Hughes, who is also organising it.
