HAVERFORDWEST 81 (8 pts.)

SAUNDERSFOOT 77 (6)

On a wet and blustery afternoon last Sunday, with the weather more suitable to November than August, Saundersfoot travelled to an away first division match at Haverfordwest, and despite the conditions, both teams survived the elements (just!) and played an exciting game, the result of which went down to the last wood.

At one time, it looked doubtful if the match would be concluded, but the rain abated slightly in the middle section before the deluge returned for the last few ends, but enabling the fixture to be concluded.

With both teams missing several of their usual players, the reserves that stepped in played admirably and the Saundersfoot boys who were drafted in should be congratulated on their performances which helped the team go close to a victory that was snatched from them at the last.

At the five end mark, the villagers led by seven shots, a lead that had been increased to 14 at halfway, with an 11-shot advantage still remaining after 15 ends.

Haverfordwest, however, are always difficult to beat at home and a late surge, helped by their supporters on the bank (or should I say huddled in the clubhouse doorway!), saw them take a narrow two-shot lead three ends later.

Despite retaking the lead, the four Saundersfoot rinks, although finishing at different times, all lost their last ends to register wins on three of the four rinks, picking up six points, but losing the overall match by four shots.

Rink score with Saundersfoot first and Haverfordwest skips only were:

Roy Hooper, Rod Bramhall, John Dugmore, Joe Dennis 14; Peter Jenkins 35.

Graham Hughes, Paul Sneyd, Alan Brain, Myrddin Dennis 23; Paul Jenkins 16.

Brian Dooley, John Amos, Paul Blayney, Steve Dick 20; Timothy Thomas 16.

Dai Davies, Selwyn Price, Neil Hensman, Brian Desmond 20; Richard O’Leary 14.

Tomorrow, the team travel to the same destination to play St. Thomas in their penultimate league match.

ST. BRIDES 27 WHITLAND 12

The St. Brides team in the one rink Meyrick Owen competition returned to the top of their league last week with a home win over Whitland.

Pam Bowen, Peter Guyett, Rod Bramhall and Dave Hicks recorded a 27 shots to 12 victory, and with only a few games to go, have an excellent chance of winning the trophy the Saundersfoot club last won way back in 1979.

ST. ISSELL’S MEN

The last two matches for the team in the second division were both cancelled last week and have been rearranged for Saturday, September 2, at home to Neyland, and Saturday, September 16, at home to Castle.
