PENDINE 70 (2 pts.) SAUNDERSFOOT 97 (12) - The Saundersfoot men’s First Division team continued their good start to their season last Saturday with a convincing 27-shot victory away to Pendine.

Following their home win over Tenby in their first fixture, captain Berwyn Dennis and his team knew that it was imperative to maintain their early season momentum and this was achieved with a second 12-point haul.

The villagers started slowly and were four shots down after five ends, but then adjusted to the green which was considerably slower than their own patch and at the halfway tea break had taken a narrow six-shot lead.

The caffeine must have worked wonders as just five ends later, the margin had increased to plus-24.

After that, it was fairly even between the two teams, but the Saundersfoot boys finished the happier and will be looking to continue their winning ways tomorrow (Saturday) when they play Five Arches, of Tenby, home with a 2 pm start.

On rink three, Myrddin Dennis skipped Graham Hughes, John Dugmore and Alan Brain against the home four of Paul Leeds, Mike Fear, Eric Davies and Geoff Hale. This was a close encounter at the start, but Popeye’s boys slowly took control and with the help of counts of a four and a three in the second half ran out winners by 23 shots to 17.

Rink four saw the best result of the day with Dai Davies, Selwyn Price, Steve Dick and captain Berwyn starting as they meant to continue with a count of seven shots on the first end and ending the game with a win of 38 shots to nine against Roger Davies, Larry Dearne, Curtis Rance and skip Mal Dix.

Roy Hooper, Neil Hensman, Brian Desmond and skip Joe Dennis played against Jamie Shields, Dave Stewart, Arwel Edwards and Mal Evans on rink five and, having finished top rink the previous week, went from a high to a low this time and were the only losing rink, being defeated by 28 shots to 17.

Berwyn was not best pleased with nephew Joe, who despite saying that it’s a team game, has been issued with a yellow card and a warning for better things tomorrow!

On a difficult rink six, which is not normally a match rink, but with a ladies game also taking place had to be used, Dennis Ball led for Steve Poole with Paul Blayney second and uncle Donny third. Six shots down at the start due to some impressive skipping by Dave King Thomas, who was assisted by Gwyn Lewis, Dave Roberts and Rod Truelove, the village four fought back and with the help of a count of six on the 15th end, eased home by 19 shots to 16.

PENDINE LADIES 33 (2 pts.) ST. ISSELL’S LADIES 40 (4)

The ladies of St. Issell’s also played on Pendine last Saturday and they, too, continued their good start to the season with a seven-shot victory.

Three wins out of three now and no wonder they were smiling in the team photograph (seen above) taken by column reporter Paul Blayney!

On rink one, Lyn Reyad, Lyn Statters, Christine Harris and Shirley Cox recorded a win by 24 shots to eight over the Gill Cobb four, whilst Christine Ball, Sandra Ingerson, Kath Blayney and team captain Sue Roden were defeated by Gwen Hale’s girls on rink two by 25 shots to 16.

Their next game is against the Saundersfoot girls next Monday at 6 pm.
