ST. ISSELL’S 83(14 pts) ST. THOMAS 65 (0)

The St. Issell’s men’s team travelled to Haverfordwest last Saturday to take on a St. Thomas team who had previously only lost one Second Division league game all season.

An inspired performance by the villagers, however, saw them win on all rinks and return home with a big grin on captain Billy Glynn’s face having gained all 14 points.

Rink scores, with St. Issell’s first and St. Thomas skips only, were:

George Cavell, Peter Guyett, John Arman, Barrie Lee 16; Mike Richards 11.

Bob Storey, Dave Hicks, Billy Glynn, Mike Carr 21; John Docherty 15.

Peter Williams, Dennis Ball, Tommy Nutt, Neil Hensman 21; Ron Harries 17.

Alan Rich, Rod Bramhall, Mike Oliver, Richard Whittaker 25; Phil John 22.

The next league fixture for the team takes place on Sunday when they will play a rearranged game away to Mariners of Pembroke Dock.

SAUNDERSFOOT 93 (12 pts) PENDINE 71(2)

The Saundersfoot men’s team also played an away fixture last Saturday and earned a 22-shot win at Pendine to secure a current third placing in the First Division league table.

On rink two, Adam Hensman led for skip Don Poole, with Alan Brain second and team captain Mackie Brace third.

The four got off to a flying start with a count of six on the first end, but a loss of four shots on the next end told them that they were in for a tight tussle.

Indeed, at the 15-end mark, the Pendine boys, skipped by Geoff Hale, led by two, but winning five of the last six ends saw the villagers home by 25 shots to 18.

Rink three saw Nev Ruff at lead, Rhys O’Mara second, Paul Blayney third and Steve Dick skip against the home four of Jamie Shields, Roger Gosnold, Arwel Edwards and Mal Evans.

Here, too, the scores see-sawed at the start whilst everyone was adjusting to the green and a dropped six on the third end was followed by a reply of five shots to Saundersfoot on the next.

Afterwards, the lead changed hands several times, before Steve and his rink won by25 shots to 21, to secure a third straight success.

John Dugmore, Selwyn Price, Louis Price and Berwyn Dennis played against the rink skipped by Stuart King Thomas and romped into a 16-shot to nil lead after just seven ends.

Although the home four rallied after that, it still led to a 24 shots to 11 win.

On rink five, Dai Davies, Roy Kennion, Brian Desmond and Myrddin Dennis were up against the other King Thomas brother, Dave, and were narrowly defeated by 21 shots to 19.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the team play at home to bottom of the table Fishguard and Goodwick, with the match starting at 2 pm.

SAUNDERSFOOT 83 ERDINGTON COURT 78

A mixed friendly was held at the green last week against visitors from the Erdington Court club in the Midlands.

An enjoyable afternoon was had by all, with the match resulting in a five-shot win for Saundersfoot.

Rink scores, with Saundersfoot first and Erdington Court skips only, were:

Peter Williams, Barbara Dearne, Brian Dooley, Mike Carr 26; E. Dobb 8.

Lyn Statters, Angie Smith, Paul Sneyd, Mick Smith 18; G. Gowler 15.

Lyn Reyed, Ken James, Roy Harris, Richard Whittaker 13; Ken Evans 15.

Audrey Williams, Val James, Bob Storey, Christine Harris 16; Peter Yates 13.

Kath Williams, Susan Dooley, Larry Dearne, Beryl Lewis 10; Tim Harding 27.

COUNTY TEAMS

Congratulations to the West Wales Ladies team, which included a number of Saundersfoot players, for defeating a strong Glamorgan team by 17 shots at Penylan in Cardiff last Sunday and in so doing, qualified for the all Wales county final next month.

The Carlsberg sponsored Pembrokeshire men’s county team also played on the same day at Saundersfoot, but lost to Monmouthshire by the same score.

The team play their last fixture on Sunday, with the senior team also completing their programme on Tuesday, with both matches taking place at Saundersfoot against Carmarthenshire.
