Pendine 71 (2 pts)
Milford Haven 83.5 (12)
Last Saturday saw Pendine playing Milford Haven at home, with all rinks occupied as the Pendine ladies were also playing a league game against Saundersfoot ladies.
The men were on rinks 3, 4, 5 and 6, while the ladies were on rinks 1 and 2.
For the men, rink three had SKT’s rink playing Roy Thomas’s four and after five ends the game was all-square 6-6. By the 10th end, though, Pendine were ahead 13-9 and after the tea break, the rink, with Don James (lead) in good form, soared ahead, winning seven of the last 11 ends to finish 27-15 up.
However, on rink four, Geoff Hale’s four faced Dave Buchanan’s quartet and after five ends the score was a tight 3-4. At the tenth and the tea break, they were 12-11 up, but then lost four ends, dropping 11 shots in the process, before pulling back a little, only to finally lose 26-17.
Rink five saw Mal Evans’s four against Ernie Sturley’s three, with the lead and second with three bowls each, which tells story as extra woods altered the head on numerous occasions, with Pendine unable to cope as they went down 11-22.5.
On rink six, DKT and his crew faced the same Milford rink they had played in the away game, skipped by Tony Ellyatt, with young Ray Lillycrop (a recent bronze medal winner in triples in Australia) at lead. This turned out to be a tight contest on a tricky rink, being 4-4 at five ends, 9-9 on 10 ends, but Pendine dropped a crucial six shots on the 14th end and could only get back to 16-20 by the finish.
Rink scores (Pendine rink first) were as follows:
D. James, R. Gosnold, A. Edwards, S. King Thomas 27; D. Harper, K. Graham, L. Jewel, R. Thomas 15.
P. Leeds, E. Davies, M. Dix, G. Hale 17; J. M. Sparrow, J. Archer, B. Cale, D. Buchanan 26.
J. Shields, D. Stewart, C. Rance, M. Evans 11; G. Walters, G. James, E. Sturley 22.5.
D. Roberts, A. Collinge, R. Truelove, D. King Thomas 16; R. Lillycrop, C. Dicks, J. Thomas, T. Ellyatt 20.
• Pendine ladies won their match against Saundersfoot ladies, six points to nil.

ST. THOMAS, Haverfordwest 61 (0)
Following the previous day’s loss, on Sunday Pendine were home to the St. Thomas team from Haverfordwest and this was a day of reckoning.
Rink two saw skip Mal Evans and his crew up against K. Simpson, whose rink got off to a flying start, being 11-0 up on five ends and 13-4 up at the tea break. Pendine lead Jamie then started to peg the jack and the rest of the rink added to it to get back to 15-15 by the 18th and eventually fought back to win 18-16.
Rink three had S.K.T’s rink, the previous day’s only winners, facing Phil John’s four. The Pendine quartet started as they finished on Saturday, being 13-1 up on five ends and, with all the team gelling well, they had stretched their lead to 23-4 at the tea break. Afterwards, they continued mastering the rink to once again capitalise on the advantage to the team and run out comfortable winners.
Rink four saw Geoff Hale’s unit against Tony Wilks’s four. Pendine were 6-4 up after five ends and, with each playing their part, were 20-9 up on the 18th, before eventually winning 21-15.
Rink five had DKT’s same four facing the returning skip Mike Richards. Pendine led 4-2 at five ends and 8-5 at the tea-break, after which the St. Thomas rink improved their game to be ahead 16-12 on the 18th. However, Pendine were not to be denied, picking up two 3s on the last two ends to win 18-17 and give the side their first clean sweep of the season.
