THE DOCK TROUNCED BY TERRIFIC TENBY

Following a string of good results of late, it was down to earth with a resounding thud last Saturday when Tenby were the visitors to the Memorial Park.

Beating Tenby is always a formidable task, but The Dock went into the match optimistic that they could earn a few points and hold onto their mid-table position.

However, it was not to be as the talented Seasiders inflicted a heavy defeat and gave a master class bowling display in readiness for their next match in the Carruthers Shield.

Rink one: Jovial Matt John was drawn to play on ‘The Swinger’ for the third consecutive match and his rink of Dave Finn, Hugh Colley and Hugh Williams gave a battling performance against a quartet led by the vastly experienced ‘veteran’ Andrew Muskett. The lead changed hands several times, with some excellent bowling by both sets of players. After 16 ends, Matt’s men edged in front, but as the previous week, were unable to hang onto the hard-earned lead and eventually lost 21-15. All in all, an excellent game with plenty of good natured banter throughout the afternoon!

Rink two: Club captain Richard Jones and his rink of Boyd Parry, Karl Bierschenk and Ken Edwards suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of a trio led by Luke Guymer. Despite their best efforts, the home rink was unable to mount a realistic challenge and on the few occasions when they held the advantage, the head was promptly shattered by Chris Court with his ‘thunderbolt’ drives. The final score was 34-9 (Tenby score adjusted to 25.5).

Rink three: This was certainly a game of two halves, with Paul Griffiths, Jerry Carroll, Reg Thomas and Richard Hissey playing well up until the interval and climbed the steps to the clubhouse leading by nine shots to eight. Unfortunately, the tea break rejuvenated the Tenby four, led by former Welsh international Kieran Peregrine, as they won 10 of the last 12 ends and ran out comfortable winners 25-11.

Rink four: According to skip Brian Dowling, his rink of Tudor Harries, Alan Yea and Dave Halward were second best in all aspects of the game. The Tenby rink skipped by young Ryan Thomas gave a first class bowling display and at the interval led by 20 shots to two. Fortunately, after the break, the Dock four managed to redeem themselves, but it was a case of ‘too little too late’, with the Tenby boys winning 26-10.

Hugely disappointed club captain Richard Jones commented after the game that it was a case of ‘back to the drawing board.’ With tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) opponents Haverfordwest flying high at the top of the table, there’s a need for a drastic improvement.

In conclusion, Richard congratulated Tenby on their recent victory in the Carruthers Shield and wished them every success in the next round.

Final score: Pembroke Dock 45 (0 pts) Tenby 97.5 (14).
