The new season got underway at Tenby Bowling Club last Saturday with the traditional rolling of the Ken Hewlings silver jack by club president, Lynn Rafferty.

Unfortunately, history does not record precisely how close her subsequent first wood of the season got to it!

Sadly, weather conditions on the day were also somewhat miserable, so rather than take advantage of an early roll-up on the lush green, the majority of those attending the opening adjourned to the warmth of the bar to reminisce about past seasons and to look forward to the new one ahead.

And that starts in earnest at 2 pm today (Saturday) with what is now the traditional first friendly against touring side Kidwelly, which is always an enjoyable occasion.

That will be followed on Sunday when the Five Arches squad take on Pendine in their annual early season friendly.

This is always played on a home and away basis on alternate years and this time it is the turn of the Sutton Street green to host the clash.

There will also be action on the green on Monday afternoon when the Tenby Five Arches Ladies welcome Park Ladies from Pembroke Dock, The ladies were also due to have played away to Picton Ladies of Haverfordwest on Thursday evening, but that has been postponed and will be rearranged at a later date.

Everyone now has their fingers crossed for some decent weather. Well we can hope, can’t we!
