County champions

HAVERFORDWEST 73 (1 pt)

TENBY 83 (13)

After the disappointment of their defeat in the Carruthers Shield semi-final the previous week, the N. D. Toy and Partners Tenby side bounced back in style on Saturday.

Travelling to Haverfordwest for what was effectively the Pembrokeshire division one title decider, the Seasiders were seeking revenge against the Town side, having slipped up against them in the very first match of the season.

But they were in no mood to let that happen again as, with the championship firmly in their sights, they kept their opponents on the back foot throughout, winning on three rinks and drawing on the other, to well and truly dash any hopes Haverfordwest may have had of claiming the county title themselves.

Bagging 13 of the 14 points on offer, meant that Tenby, still with a game remaining, had opened up an unassailable lead at the top of the table, and so the celebrations for captain Andrew Muskett and his men could finally begin.

It is the sixth successive season that Tenby have won the title since 2008 and the 37th time overall since the league's inauguration in 1935. From 1991 to 1998 they also won the title seven times in a row. Will the current team better that record? With a host of youngsters - and a few 'old heads' - in the side, there is every chance that they can.

Tenby have to wait another three weeks to finally finish this season's league programme, however, when they entertain Neyland in a rearranged match at the Sutton Street green on Saturday, September 21.

The match is due to have an early morning start, so that the Tenby side can continue their celebrations afterwards with their 'end of season do'.

Rink results against Haverfordwest on Saturday were as follows

Luke Rees, Ben Cloake, Luke Guymer and Craig Guymer bt Chris Court and Co by four shots.

Neil Dickinson, James Criddle, Joe Richards and John Roberts bt Ryan Thomas and Co by six shots.

Cameron White, Aaron Lloyd, Mike Jackson and Andrew Muskett bt Richard O'Leary and Co by one shot.

Joe Criddle, Ben Simmons, Peter Day and Paul Diment drew with Jason Dixon and Co.

Second Division champions

FIVE ARCHES 81 (9 pts) ST. THOMAS 77 (5)

Last Saturday, the visitors to Sutton Street were St. Thomas for what was the Arches' penultimate league game.

This turned out to be a very tough encounter, with the Tommys winning on two rinks and drawing on another. It was down to Ashley's rink to secure the points for the Arches, which they did with a 10-shot win over Norman Brown and his men.

The Arches have been setting the pace in division two from day one of season way back in April, and with their last league game also at home against Pembroke Dock Pater on Sunday, the Arches players were determined to finish their campaign on a high note.

John Rees, Steve Davies, Clive Webb, Ray Taylor 18; Mike Richards 19.

Ray Hine, Kevin Lewis, Ken Lloyd, Dai Spencer 17; Lyndon Frayling 22.

Mike Gouldingay, Jon Hubbard, Tony Powling, Ashley Hooper 27; Norman Brown 17.

Ron Hurlow, Jim Taylor, Peter Hooper, Gerald Hewitt 19; Phil John 19.

FIVE ARCHES 117 (14 pts) PEMBROKE DOCK PATER 46 (0)

On a beautiful day for bowling, on a superb green prepared by Paul Diment, the Arches clinched the second division title with a powerful performance on Sunday.

With all four rinks winning their games, the Arches gained a 14 points to nil victory, with a shot count of 117 to 46 for the Pater team.

This win brought the curtain down on what has been a magnificent league campaign for the Five Arches squad. Every player who has represented the team has played a part in the success.

First off were Dai and Ken playing on their favourite rink two. With Ben Cloake and Kevin Lewis in top form, the rink cruised to a 32 shots to nine win.

Next off were Tiger and the Cubs with an 18-12 win over Pater captain Steve James. This was a much closer game, as Steve, who had a cracking game, kept changing the head with saving bowls when the Cubs were holding numerous counts. The Cubs then made sure of the points by picking up 11 shots over the last six ends - well done John, Steve, Clive and Ray.

Rink four saw Ashley's crew once again top rink, with a 36 shots to eight win over Martin Hyde and his men. With Cameron White having a superb game up front, Jonno, Tony and Ashley had a stress-free afternoon, building up the shot count. This win saw Ashley maintain his unbeaten league record.

On rink one, Gerald and his men were going to be last off. With Ron, Jim and Peter all bowling well, Gerald stepped on the mat with his last bowl to deliver the coup de grace, and ensure a 31 shots to 17 win over skip Steve John and his rink.

Second division champions and Brain Cup winners - well done everyone. It was now time for the fat lady to sing!

The Arches players would like to thank all the ladies who looked after us with our teas, all our supporters and the youngsters who stepped in to play for us when we needed them, namely the three Bens, Cameron and Luke.

The Arches players would also like to congratulate Andrew and the Tenby squad on winning the County Shield, again, and on their Carruthers semi-final appearance.
