OPEN MIXED PAIRS
Following close on the heels of last week's successful Open Week tournament at Tenby Bowling came this week's two-wood Open Mixed Pairs event, again featuring players from all over Wales.
Kindly sponsored by the Tenby House Hotel, the event was played over two days, initially as two round robin leagues on Monday, with the top four pairs in each going through to the knockout stages on Tuesday.
Happily, the weather again stayed kind, enabling some excellent bowls to be played, with results in the latter stages being as follows:
Quarter-finals: Jon Hubbard and Ginnie Beeken 5 Pam Smith and Tommy Nutt 6; Barrie Absolom and Mary Codd 11 Paul Bancroft and Audrey Owens 7; Tony and Jean Davis 5 Sian and Nigel Davies 6; Meryl Cooke and Wyn Howells 7 Ray and Joan Taylor 11.
Semi-finals: Pam Smith and Tommy Nutt (Haverfordwest) 4 Barrie Absolom and Mary Codd (Haverfordwest) 10; Nigel and Sian Davies (Whitland) 5 Ray and Joan Taylor (Tenby) 8.
Final: Barrie Absolom and Mary Codd 10 Ray and Joan Taylor 4.
Following the tournament, the prizes were presented by Tenby club captain, Fred Broomhead.
CARRUTHERS QUEST
Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenby head to the home of Welsh Bowls,Llandrindod Wells, as they continue their quest to win the coveted Carruthers Shield for the second time in five years.
To all intents and purposes the club championship of Wales, Tenby won the trophy back in 2009 and since then have reached the semi-final stage on three more occasions.
Last year they lost out to the eventual winners, RTB Ebbw Vale, and coincidently they are their opponents in the semis again this year.
The Seasiders will be hoping to gain revenge tomorrow morning and feature in the afternoon final against either Ammanford Park, last year's beaten finalists, or Gilfach from the Rhymney Valley.
A coach will be leaving early in the morning and several supporters will also be travelling to cheer on the team as they attempt to bring the shield back to Tenby.
Meanwhile, back on the home front, it has been a busy week for the Tenby team, having played three league games in just six days.
Keeping up their challenge to retain the Pembrokeshire title for a sixth successive year, they picked up a maximum 14 points against Castle of Haverfordwest on Saturday and followed that up with another 14-pointer against neighbours Saundersfoot on Tuesday evening.
As we were going to press yesterday (Thursday) evening, they were due to play Milford Haven on the Sutton Street green and were looking for another confidence-boosting victory in readiness for the 'big one' - or hopefully two - tomorrow (Saturday).
