Five Arches 51 Pembroke Dock 112
Blue skies in Tenby for the Friday night clash with Pembroke Dock and ultimately very blue feelings for the Five Arches team at the end of the game. Pembroke Dock were looking for revenge after our fortunate eight points to six win on their home patch earlier on in the season and Five Arches were trying to stop a sequence of seven defeats in a row.
On rink two, the game started brightly for the home team, Clive, ably assisted by Harold. John and Mike, picked up three shots on the first end and continued their recent run of good form. Leading by 14 shots to seven at tea, they hung on despite a spirited fightback by the Pembroke Dock quartet to win by 22 shots to 20. However, this was the highpoint of the night for the Arches, the remaining three rinks suffered as the Pembroke Dock boys exacted full revenge.
On tricky rink three, young Ben and his experienced trio of Ken, Tony and Peter gained shots on the first two ends, but then didn't score for the next nine. Trailing by 14 shots to two at tea, they fought back, but couldn't match the powerful Dock rink and lost by 30 shots to 11.
Ray, Tony, Joe and John were struggling from the start against another strong rink. With 10 ends played they were down by 18 shots to four. The Pembroke Dock foursome were relentless and picked up shots on eight of the remaining 11 ends to run out handsome winners by 34 shots to nine.
To complete a trio of big wins for the opposition, Ashley with Ben, Harry and Steve matched their opponents for the first seven ends to be level at four shots apiece. However, the wheels then completely fell off, down by 18 shots to five after 13 ends and eventually a very comfortable 28 shots to nine win for the away team.
Not the result we were hoping for, but we should not be too disappointed as Pembroke Dock are a very fine team.
Next game tomorrow (Saturday) away to Pendine.
Rink scores (Fives Arches first, Dock skips only):
Mike Gouldingay, John Hubbard, Harold Ebdon, Clive Webb 22; Brian Dowling 20.
Ken Lloyd, Tony Powling, Peter Hooper, Ben Simmons 11; Reg Thomas 30.
John Rees, Joe Hewitt, Tony Brown, Ray Taylor 9; Dave Buchanan 34.
Ben Sheldon, Harry Meades, Steve Davies, Ashley Hooper 9; Richard Jones 28.
TENBY 105
OLD LANDORIANS 69
The Layton and Co Solicitors sponsored Tenby side were in Carruthers action against Swansea-based Old Landorians last Saturday.
The winners of this contest would progress to the quarter-finals of Wales' premier club competition.
Tenby were coming off the back of their first defeat of the season at Haverfordwest, but captain Jon Webb and his selectors opted to keep faith with the same side.
On a glorious sunny day with the green in perfect condition, both sides commenced battle.
On the show rink were Dai Spencer, Jon Webb, Mike Jackson and skip John Roberts. The Tenby four raced into an early lead which included an excellent six count on the second end, the opposition unfortunately never recovered from this poor start, and with Mike Jackson in outstanding form, the home rink ran out 15-shot winners.
Rink two consisted of Luke Rees, Aaron Lloyd, Peter Day and Andrew Muskett. The two youngsters up front again excelled, and with Peter and Andrew on top of their game, the win was never in doubt. A credible nine-shot win over Welsh International Steve Rees proved how well Andrew and his men had performed on the day.
Top rink of the day was Cameron White, John Baggott, Pat Currie and Paul Diment. With all four rink members in fine form, they destroyed the opposition in a match winning 21-shot victory.
Neil Dickinson, Joe Richards, Luke and Craig Guymer were pitched up against former Tenby skip Mal Bishop on the tricky rink four. This was always going to be a tough test for the home rink, who managed to keep it close early on, but unfortunately they let it slip in the latter stages, losing out by a disappointing nine-shot defeat.
A comfortable 36-shot victory was the final outcome giving the home side a much deserved win, which sets-up an away trip to Llandrindod Wells in the last eight of the competition.
It is back to league action for the Tenby team tonight with a home encounter with Pembroke Dock and then a trip away tomorrow to Haverfordwest Castle.
