Five Arches 68 Castle 91

An unusual Friday night game for the Five Arches and also an important one.

After a series of defeats, it was imperative that we got back to winning ways. However, Castle are also embroiled in the relegation dogfight, so both teams were 'well up' for this match.

The game started in sunshine, another unusual occurrence this summer, and on rink two, vice-captain Ben and his rink of John, Tony and Peter also began brightly, opening up a six shots to one lead after four ends. By tea, the game was delicately poised, the Five Arches leading by nine shots to seven. The Castle foursome responded and gained the lead with a series of seven shots in three ends, eventually holding on to this advantage to run out winners by 20 shots to 14.

Tony and his rink of Ben, Joe and Ken had almost the worst start possible, dropping seven shots on the first end. They fought back to be only 16 shots to seven down at tea, but could not close the seven-shot gap and ended up losing by 22 shots to 15.

Rink four saw Ashley and a new combination of Steve, Harry and Five Arches debutant Howard involved in a game of two halves. The first half completely belonged to the Castle quartet, at one stage leading by 20 shots to six. However, inspired bowling by the Five Arches players, especially Howard, saw them gain 18 shots in six ends and then hold on to win by 27 shots to 23.

Clive and his rink of Mike, Johno and Ray were up against it on rink five. Playing a strong Castle team, they did well to be only two down after seven ends, but the visitors went up another gear and piled on the shots, eventually winning by 26 shots to 12.

Ultimately, another disappointing game for the Five Arches, gaining only two points. However, there are six games to go and we definitely have a good performance or two ready and waiting.

Next game is tonight (Friday), home to Pembroke Dock.

County Finals

Congratulations to all county final winners last weekend, but a special mention must go to 14-year-old Aaron Lloyd who won two singles championships against much older opposition. Well done Aaron from all at Tenby Bowling Club, certainly one to watch for the future.
