WHITLAND 19 pts.

WAUNARLWYDD 37

Whitland's season of mixed fortune continued last weekend as they went down to a strong Waunarlwydd team.

The defeat was perhaps not that surprising, though, as Waunarlwydd are currently top of the Division One West table with five victories out of their six matches played.

In contrast, the Borderers have only been successful in two of their six and as a result are struggling in the lower echelons of the section.

But bouyed by their excellent victory over Ammanford the previous week, the Borderers were certainly 'up for it' as they took the field at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn on Saturday.

Indeed, they showed great spirit and determination as they gave as good as they got in the early exchanges, only to be rocked back on their heels by the sending off of their winger Matt Haldene.

Reduced to 14 men, the Borderers' uphill battle now became a particularly steep one, but they showed true grit as they restricted the visitors to a 15-11 lead at the interval.

Whitland's points came courtesy of an unconverted try by forward Aidan Laxton and two penalty goals from the boot of centre Nico Setaro.

Laxton also added a second touchdown after the break, while Setaro banged over a third penalty, but that was all the gallant Borderers had to show for their efforts, for, as they began to tire, Waunarlwydd stepped on the gas to add another 22 second half points and run out comfortable winners in the end.

The Borderers will be hoping for a change in fortune when they travel to play Cwmllynfell in their next league match tomorrow (Saturday).
