Narberth Youth 3 pts. Aberystwyth 25
Aberystwyth picked up the Pembrokeshire Youth Cup with a display of power rugby from a very strong forward pack, but the result of the final was in the balance until the last few minutes.
Playing with the elements in their favour in the first half, Aber opened the scoring in the 11th minute when scrum-half Llyr Thomas landed a penalty.
After more pressure, Aber drove over from the five- metre line, with Steffan Bonsall claiming the try, and again Thomas added the extras.
Narberth took every opportunity to run from everywhere on the field, trying to keep the ball away from the Aber forwards. Open-side flanker Jake Iles, back from a serious injury, was having a very impressive game alongside fellow back rowers Zac France-Miller and young Jason Evans.
Narberth's only score came 30 minutes into the game when winger Jake Phillpin was successful with a penalty.
The killer blow came on the half-time whistle when a mix-up in the Narberth defence allowed the Aber centre to pounce on a loose ball to score a try.
It went unconverted, but the interval came with the score 15-3 to Aberyswyth.
The young Otters had the use of the wind in the second period, but missed several opportunities with penalty infringements, which cost them dearly, and a penalty against the run of play by Gwion Phillips put the game out of their reach.
Narberth threw everything at Aber in the dying minutes and, just when it looked like they would finally cross the line, replacement centre Bamwell Yallop intercepted to run the full length of the field to score under the posts, which again Thomas converted, resulting in the final score 25-3 and Aberystwyth taking the cup in this Dragon LNG Cup Final.
Afterwards, the Narberth rugby development coach commented: "The final score did not reflect the game, but sport can be so cruel."
Aber fully deserved their victory and captain Chris Randell picked up the cup, but the Fred Fry trophy for man-of-the-match went to the outstanding Narberth flanker Jake Iles. Indeed, the young Otters can be proud of their efforts to play with such commitment in an attempt to outrun the Aberystwyth forward domination. The Otters back row forwards were outstanding.
