Only the second Brazilian tapir to be born in Wales has arrived at Folly Farm, Begelly.
The female youngster is the second baby for the attraction's resident tapirs, Shawn and Sommer, and marks another significant success for the attraction's captive breeding efforts.
The proud parents have been inseparable since they were paired up at Folly Farm, and it was a first for Wales when they were joined by baby Ligea, in 2006.
Now, after a 13-month pregnancy, Sommer has produced this latest new arrival, born with a distinctive spotted and striped coat which she will wear for the first six months of her life to camouflage her against predators.
"The baby is a really nice, strong little youngster," said zoo manager Tim Morphew. "It's good news that Sommer has had another girl as there are 20 surplus males in the European Breeding Programme.
"We are very proud to have this fine quartet of tapirs and to be part of the efforts to save these weird and wonderful creatures from extinction."
The endangered tapir is a hoofed mammal with an anteater-like snout and although a land animal, loves to swim in water and wallow in mud. In tribute to this, the new baby has been named Yarah, which means 'water lady' in Brazilian Portuguese.
She can be seen with her parents and sister in Folly Farm's purpose-built land and water tapir enclosure in the zoo section of the park.
Folly Farm is open daily from tomorrow (Saturday) until November 1 from 10 am until 5.30 pm (5 pm from September 28). Weekend opening commences from November 2 from 10 am until 4 pm.
