Spectators at the Lewis Lloyd Ground, Narberth, on Sunday were entertained by a feast of competitive rugby as youngsters from Narberth and Whitland met in what was an atmosphere of eager anticipation with the hint of a local derby thrown in. The quality of rugby on display was a tribute to the coaching staff and players of both sides - from the Under 8s through to the Under 13s.

To add to the enjoyment, spectators also enjoyed a feast of hot food and drinks which were made available by the hard-working members of the Narberth Junior Club's Ladies Committee. Their hot food take-away is something you should experience !

This game was full of excitement as both teams worked hard to copy the moves of their adult heroes - dummying to the left and then to the right, with determined support play, was the obvious game plan for both teams.

It was Narberth who finally broke the deadlock by scoring four tries in quick succession, through Harry Owen, Angharad James and Conner Lloyd.

Whitland were worthy of their try which was scored in the dying minutes of the game.

Narberth took to the field in determined mood, but were soon overwhelmed by a much stronger Whitland side who, once into their stride, took control of the game.

In a 10-minute blitz in which they laid siege to the Narberth line, Whitland ran in three tries, only to follow that up with a further three midway through the second half.

Narberth refused to give up and were rewarded by a well-deserved consolation try scored by Kial Keane.

Commenting after the game Narberth U9s team representative Avril Morgan was full of praise for both teams, but also, characteristically, reminded her players that it was training as usual at 6.30 pm on Friday !

Playing in ideal conditions, both sides made every effort to move the ball, with Narberth winning the early exchanges, and they might well have opened the scoring but for some stout Whitland defending.

Settling into their game mid-way through the first half, Whitland began to put the Narberth defence under pressure and opened their scoring following some neat recycling with a try scored close to the posts.

Not to be outdone, Narberth replied with some well-worked moves, only to be denied on no fewer than three occasions within yards of the Whitland line.

Following a turnover, the Whitland backs moved the ball quickly to produce a try deep in the corner.

The second half was played at a less hectic pace, and with both defences even, there were no further scores.

Taking on a very strong Whitland side, the Narberth prop and captain, John Edwards, elected to kick-off.

With conditions ideal for open rugby, it was Whitland who were the quicker to settle down and they were soon able to open up gaps in the Narberth pack, who were much slower to the breakdown.

Such was their dominance in the first half that Whitland were able to run in six well-worked tries.

The second half saw Whitland continue from where they had left off and, despite some heroic tackling by Narberth centre Rhidian Bell and the equally hard-working back row Adam Jenkins, Whitland were able to score a further four tries.

The Narberth Under 13s rugby team got the better of local rivals Whitland in an entertaining game at the Lewis Lloyd ground on Sunday.

The home side kicked off and kept Whitland pinned down in their own half for the opening period. After 10 minutes, the pressure paid off when, following a tapped penalty, Narberth's big second row forward Gareth Jones barged over for the first try.

From the re-start, a Narberth forward caught the ball and drove into the Whitland pack. The ball was quickly recycled and passed along the backs for a speedy fullback, Gethin Salter, to outrun the defence and score under the posts.

This momentum was maintained when, a few minutes later, a Whitland centre was tackled by his opposite number. The ball was gathered by the supporting forwards and fed to strong running number eight, Rian Whatmore, who broke through tackles to score from far out.

Before half-time, Narberth scored two more tries, from winger Sammy Hampson and Gethin Salter, following good forward pressure and quick passing along the backs.

The second-half began as the first had finished with two more quick tries for the home side, this time from scrum-half Gavin James, and another from Gethin Salter.

The Whitland side, which had been fighting its way back into the game, then applied a long period of pressure in the Narberth 22. This finally brought a well-earned try for the visitors as winger David Thomas went over in the corner.

Although the remainder of the game was a much more evenly balanced affair, Narberth ran out comfortable winners following a good all-round team performance. Four of the Narberth tries were converted by fly-half Rhodri James.
