Over 400 young musicians took part in this year's Pembrokeshire Chevron Primary School's Music Festival.

The 27th festival was held earlier this month at Sir Thomas Picton School, in Haverfordwest.

Organised by Pembrokeshire County Council music service and sponsored by Chevron, the annual competition aims to provide young musicians with the experience of performing in front of an appreciative audience of parents, teachers and friends.

On Saturday morning (May 9), individual performers and groups took part in a wide range of competitions for instruments and ensembles, while later at an afternoon concert, the winners and area orchestras and bands performed to a capacity audience.

The overall winner of the festival was pianist Talis Spence from Saundersfoot.

Other winners were Harry Whitehurst from Saundersfoot who won the percussion class and flautist Laura Nix from Tavernspite who won the woodwind section.

The winner of the brass competition was Aled Meredith Barratt from Croesgoch, while the winner of the string competition was Jonathon Roche from Wolfscastle.

The Glan Cleddau Cello Quartet won the ensemble competition.

Chris Llewellyn, head of the county music service, said the number of pupils who took part in the event, coupled with the high standards of performance, demonstrated the strength of music in the county's primary schools.

"Pembrokeshire continues to be one of the leading musical counties in Wales," he said.

The professional adjudicators were: Edward Burns, strings; Georgina Davies, ensembles; Christopher Lovegrove, piano; Dennis Mahoney, brass; Peter Morgan, percussion and Chris Ryan.
