For the last year, eight gifted mathematicians from Tenby Junior School have been taking part in maths lessons with a difference. As part of the school's provision to cater for the 'More Able and Talented' children, eight pupils from Year 6 have been studying GCSE standard maths in their MAT group. The plan was for the children to sit the real thing at Greenhill School which involved coursework, but after liaising with Mr. Darren Osborne, head of maths at Greenhill, it was decided to create the 'Tenby and Greenhill School's Certificate of Education'. Mr. Osborne then compiled a test and marked them all once they had been completed. Ella Brindley, Ella Rook, Jemima Childs, Daniel Tiesing, Huw Owen and Tom Hancock all achieved a Grade C, while Naomi Hunt and Liam Mills achieved a Grade D - which is fantastic, considering that these children are only 10 and 11 years of age. "Most inmportantly, the children have absolutely loved the challenge," said Tenby Junior School's deputy head, Mr. Andrew Williams. "We realised that we had a talented group in Year 6 and, having heard of a school in another authority that had done it, we thought it would really challenge our most able mathematicians. "It was great that we had Mrs. Giselle Mills within the school who had recently passed a higher tier GCSE paper and was very keen to use her expertise with the group. Greenhill School and Mr. Osborne, in particular, have also given us fantastic support throughout the year and I'm sure they are already looking forward to challenging these children in September," added Mr. Williams.
