The Rotary Club of Tenby's annual Young Chef competition, held in conjunction with Pembrokeshire College, was once again keenly contested and attracted a very high standard of entries.

The bad news was that none of the winners were able to attend the presentation ceremony in Tenby this week, but the very good news is that the winner and runners-up are all now in full-time employment and were busy working hard putting the skills that they have learnt to very good use.

Certificates and prize money were presented by Mr. Desmond King, general manager, of Chevron Texaco Ltd., (Pembroke plant) to college students Melissa Baker and Natasha Packard, on behalf of the overall winner Leah Ferris, who now works at the Angel Hotel in Cardiff, and the three runners- up, Michael Rees, Claire Morgan and Lisa Hope, who are now working at the Glen Hotel in Haverfordwest, and establishments in Taunton and north Pembrokeshire, respectively.

Prior to presenting the prizes, Mr. King paid tribute to the winning students and to Pembrokeshire College, which he said "played a very important part in educating students following vocational careers." Mr. King also gave a very entertaining talk on his own background in the oil industry, and of the history of the Chevron Texaco oil company, and their proud association with Pembrokeshire.

A sincere vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Chris Sierwald, who also praised the students and Pembrokeshire College, as well as sincerely thanking Mr. King for presenting the prizes that evening, (particularly as he had only that day returned from a business trip to the company headquarters in California) and also for the tremendous support that Texaco continues to give Rotary, and many other organisations in Pembrokeshire.

The club were very pleased that Pembrokeshire College faculty manager, Mr. Paul Hudson, and programme area manager, Judith Watson, were able to be present on the evening and wish to thank them both along with the competition sponsors, Mr. Bob Willing of J. V. Rowe butchers, Mr. Huw Scale, of Four Seasons fruiterers, Castell Howell Foods and Celtic Pride, for their valuable assistance with the successful competition.
