A SWANSEA mother and daughter will be tackling the Tenby 4k Starlight Walk on wheels and crutches, spurred on by personal tragedies.
Organised by Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire Sands, the Starlight Walk takes place in Tenby on Tuesday, December 8 in memory of precious babies.
Alongside being a full-time carer for her youngest daughter, Georgina Horton-Jones runs the baby loss support page ‘Charlotte and Caderyn’s Wings Of Hope’, offering comfort and support to families.
She told the Tenby Observer: “I lost my first set of twins, Charlotte and Caderyn, in 2007, and heartbreakingly lost my second set of twins, Bodhi and Nathaniel in 2020.
“This December, I am travelling down to complete the 4k charity route to honour my four beautiful angels.”
However, Georgina’s challenge features a major physical twist: she underwent serious foot surgery on Monday, October 26, meaning she will be navigating the entire 4K course on crutches! Right beside her will be her daughter, who will be completing the walk in her wheelchair.
Despite managing full-time caring responsibilities and running a support platform, Georgina wants to use her personal journey to spotlight this regional event and the incredible work that Sands does. The charity provides a lifeline to bereaved families across the UK, offering a free national helpline, local peer-support groups with trained befrienders, online forums, and vital memory boxes in hospitals to help parents capture irreplaceable early memories of their babies.
“Supporting them is deeply personal to me,” said Georgina. “While I already offer support to families independently, I had to put off training to become an official Sands befriender in 2016 due to my full-time caring responsibilities. I fully hope to finally undertake that formal training with Sands next year to support other bereaved parents.
“If the two of us can take on the gradients of the coast on wheels and crutches for our angels, we want to inspire people right across the Swansea, Carmarthenshire, and Pembrokeshire region to lace up their walking shoes and join us to support Sands.”
The Tenby 4k Starlight Walk will set off from North Beach Car Park at 6.15pm on Tuesday, December 8, and will take walkers across The Croft and over to South Beach, towards the railway station and back to the starting point.
It will finish at St Johns Church with the opportunity to hang a decoration on the Christmas tree in memory of a precious baby. The church will also be providing refreshments at the end of the walk.
Admission is £7 per person, with children under 3 free.
Members of the public can book their place on the walk directly via the Sands event page: https://fundraising.sands.org.uk/register/starlight-walk-carmarthenshire-pembrokeshire/defaultregistrationform .
