Folly Farm has unveiled its latest arrivals - a fluffy owl and its furry friend a toy owl.

Orbit, the barn owl, is being hand-reared by Folly Farm's head zookeeper Lynsey Woods after being abandoned by its mother.

Now five-weeks-old, Orbit has been looked after by surrogate mother Lynsey since day one of his life, and now he has a new friend to keep him company - a cuddly soft toy owl from Folly Farm's shop!

Having noticed that his mother wasn't behaving very maternally and that Orbit was looking starved, Lynsey took the difficult and time-consuming decision to raise the chick by hand.

Delighted with the results some five weeks later, Lynsey has started to form a strong bond with Orbit, her second hand-reared owl, having raised Folly Farm's resident tawny owl, Achilles, a few years ago.

"Orbit was very weak when we took the decision to hand-rear him, but he's now doing really well.," said Lynsey.

"Hopefully he'll be strong enough to be on display to visitors to Folly Farm by the summer."

"For the moment though he's being kept warm in an incubator and snuggles up to his toy owl for comfort," enthused Lynsey.

"A friend suggested I got him the toy owl to keep him comapny whilst I'm busy with the rest of the keepers looking after all the zoo animals at Folly Farm.  I thought he would try to eat the toy, but he's really taken to it and just cuddles up!" she concluded.
