Saturday was a proud day for the president of Carmarthenshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, Mrs. Elonwy Phillips, of Brynsiriol, Heol y Gogledd, Whitland, as she saw several hundred club members from across the county compete in a wide range of competitions - practical and novelty - at the annual County Rally. YFC is unique from all other youth organisations as it is a peer led organisation in that the members play the key role in the decision-making at the various levels within the movement. Regardless of personal circumstances, urban or rural background, the YFC offers young people pathways to friendship, achievement and a chance to take control. It is an association of local clubs run by young people for young people, that welcomes members from all communities in the town or countryside and this is the rock on which it has evolved. Mrs. Phillips explained that the success of the Rally, and indeed the whole YFC programme, depended greatly upon the full co-operation of members, their families and friends "It is a pleasure to witness the tremendous enthusiasm of the young members of their clubs and also the immense amount of voluntary work which they contribute to their own communities," said Mrs. Phillips. She added: "I feel so proud of the commitment of these youngsters and the support which they so willingly give to those less fortunate than themselves. In this economic climate it is not an easy task to fund the day to day running of their clubs and raise money for local charities - but it does teach them the importance of caring for others." At the end of the day, Llanelli club members consolidated the excellent result achieved at last year's rally by winning both the senior and junior shields.
