Sir,

I recently wrote a letter asking if we would ever get a new cancer day unit at Withybush Hospital after many years of fighting and fundraising. All I want is a yes or no.

I have recently been doing some digging and found a Hywel Dda Charitable Funds Committee Summary Report following a meeting held on November 23, 2010, in which it states: "certain commitments were made by the health board which the committee would want the health board to meet in terms of how the funds will be spent, particularly in regard to clear dates for the provision of a new cancer day unit and its exact location within Withybush General Hospital. However, members recognised that it would be premature for the health board to provide these commitments before the outcome of the clinical services review which will shape the provision of healthcare over the next five years, and will not be concluded until the summer of 2011. In the meantime, the health board were able to provide an assurance that the cancer care unit at Withybush General Hospital is not under threat, and the chairman of the health board, Mr. Chris Martin, agreed to issue a statement to the Bucketful of Hope committee to be used in the local media in order to provide further assurance on this to the local population."

Mr. Chris Martin never provided a statement to assure the public over the new CDU and this was all over three years ago!

A decision should have been made in the summer of 2011 and still we wait. There has been another clinical review since then.

Years and years, of promises and excuses, and sitting on hundreds of thousands of pounds of money donated by Pembrokeshire people for this very thing. Get on with it and give us the cancer day unit that the people of Pembrokeshire deserve.
