At 7 pm on Friday, July 29, Simon Hancock, curator of Haverfordwest Town Museum, will be giving a talk at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery entitled Women in Pembrokeshire during the First World War.

Simon has undertaken extensive research into the war and its effects upon Pembrokeshire. The talk will look at the lives of women in the county during this tumultuous period and will consider whether it was the story of the breakthrough in the status of women which it has been traditionally maintained.

By the end of the war, around 80,000 women in Britain had enlisted for non-combatant roles, and in 1914, over 2,000 women had offered their services to the Red Cross, many declining a salary, and from this list individuals were sent to areas of hostility including France, Belgium, Serbia and Gallipoli.

The museum currently has an exhibition on Tenby during the First World War and this details some of the women from Tenby who served during the war.

If you are interested in hearing Simon’s fascinating talk, then please contact the museum (01834) 842809. Tickets cost £5 (£4 with a Friends membership card) and seats are limited.
