Colby Gallery is once again hosting a solo exhibition of latest work by prolific painter- poet Audrey Petersen. Never short of ideas, Audrey's inspiration comes from many sources, reflecting her many and varied interests. You may see a pair of wind-blown figures battling to control a kite, a jaunty fishing boat beside a traditional striped lighthouse, or a solitary suited gent (reminiscent of Dirk Bogarde in 'Death in Venice'?) seated on a deck chair. Her poems are equally unpredictable. As she says, "Sometimes an event inspires a poem, which then inspires a painting... but not always." Hence, in the exhibition, some paintings are displayed with an accompanying poem... but not always. This year, a little collection of her own unique Japanese style Haiku poems will also be available, providing - albeit somewhat unnecessarily - further proof of Audrey's endless creativity. The exhibition runs from May 16 to 29 and Audrey herself will be in the gallery on each Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning of her fortnight's show - your opportunity to meet the woman of 'infinite variety', though in this case, she hails from St. Florence rather than Egypt. For those in search of exoticism of a horticultural nature, the Woodland Gardens are offering spectacular Himalayan azaleas and rhododendrons throughout the month of May. Bookings are being taken for the head gardener's guided walk and lunch on Tuesday, May 17. The gardens, gallery and tearoom are open daily 10-5 pm. Enquiries, please ring (01834) 814200.
