The Borderers saw their seven-game winning spell come to a grinding halt at the hands of Aberavon on Monday night, who, with this victory, returned to the top of division one.

Aberavon now have to win all their remaining games to make sure of their third successive title, but Wizards coach, Chris O'Callaghan, said after the match: "In fairness to Whitland, they gave us a good test, but I'm happy with our winning margin."

The loss leaves Whitland clinging onto a faint hope of 'seventh heaven', but this result may have ended any dreams.

The first half did have both teams on fairly level peggings, and in fact Whitland did take a brief 10-9 lead after 30 minutes, with their score including a try through wing Lee Glanville.

The lead lasted all of three minutes, however, for the Wizards hit back when their winger found space and touched down in the right-hand corner to re-store their advantage.

Fly-half Jamie Davies added a penalty before half-time to leave the scores at 17-10, with just one converted try in it.

Both teams extended their scores with a couple of penalties at the start of the second half, before Aberavon centre Kristan Owen managed to distract the Borderers' defence long enough to give Ricky Price space to cross for his second try of the day.

After another drop goal, Whitland were 30-13 down, but still battled to keep their winning record alive, and more importantly their promotion chances, but alas it was in vain, because as they pressed forward, they left gaps and the Wizards' scrum-half punished them with a darting run, before off-loading to wing Sam Greenway, who completed the day's action with another try.

Whitland, like Narberth, still have an outside chance of grabbing that sought-after seventh spot, but it will come down to the failure of others, rather than the success of Whitland. Things are still wide open and it leaves a lot to be decided in the last games of the season this coming weekend.
