Wisemans Bridge Rowing Club have had one of their most successful seasons ever during 2011, winning a total of three cups for first place.

The first of these was won by the ladies team who took part in the round Ramsey Island race.

The race itself is set over a 7.5-mile course and on the day, attracted around 25 boats.

The team consisted of Dawn Freebury, Cleo Wilson, Elen Jones, Sarah Parker and Annie Taylor. Their final time was one hour and 17 minutes, which was only seven minutes behind the overall winners which was a mens team, so many congrats to the ladies.

The club also entered a men's team on the day, and even though they didn't achieve a first place, they came in just two minutes after the winning team, so again, well done the mens team.

The next win came with the Haverfordwest/Dale Marathon race. This is a race held over 22 miles, starting in Haverfordwest and ending in Dale.

The weather that day was wet and windy, producing a choppy sea so the conditions were not ideal.

Due to the number of boats on the water, it was difficult to know how we had been placed at the end of the race, and it wasn't until the results were called that Wisemans Bridge realised that we had won the mixed class, bringing home yet another trophy!

This was especially exciting as they had won this race the previous year too.

The crew were Cleo Wilson, Sarah Parker, Helen Jenkins, John Dunton, Neil Cross and Mark Atwell.

The final win came just last weekend, with the Cardigan race.

Eleven Celtic longboats and a skiff gathered in Cardigan for the second annual Mermaid Quays handicapped rowing race.

The wind was greater than had been hoped for, so the usual 11-mile course was shortened to a six-mile one. The ladies team had been entered by our club and very early on in the race they started to pull away from the other ladies teams, eventually winning the class. The crew were Annie Taylor, Cleo Wilson,

Elen Jones, Sarah Parker and Bryony Jones. Not only did they win a trophy but also they scooped a prize fund of £150 which has been an unexpected boost for the club funds. Pic attached

Well done to all three teams for their stalwart efforts this season, and to all our other teams who took part in races at Llangwm and Dale (three forts race) during the summer.

Members now look forward to the final race of the season, the Great River Race in London in September. This is their annual jaunt down the Thames, rowing a distance of 21 miles starting out from Greenwich and ending in Richmond. Hopes are high this year, judging on all the successes so far.

The club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at Wisemans Bridge and all are welcome to come along for a try out, meeting at 6 pm. Winter rowing times are soon to be posted on the website - wisemansbridgerowingclub.co.uk so please take time to take a look if you are interested.

Other events in the pipeline include helping to man the forthcoming Ironman event which is happening on Sunday, September 11.

For this, the club will be putting forward 10 volunteers to marshall the course so that is one day when they won't actually be rowing!

The club would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Kemble family from the Wisemans Bridge pub for all their support in allowing them to use their premises to store the boats and equipment, Karl Watson from Stepaside's Heritage Park for all his generous support with equipment, and lastly, LNG for their donation of £200 earlier this year.
