Sir,
Re. the Brynhir development proposal, I am very alarmed to see that rather than demanding that the 30-year-old and out of date Local Development Plan, which includes the Brynhir site, should be reviewed and scrapped, councillors are actually backing this development, even to the extent of accepting that a reduction for the requirement for affordable homes is needed to make it viable.
Tenby does not need more housing generally, the population is declining, it needs targeted solutions to a problem of lack of low cost rented housing for local people.
Big developments like this make it easy for politicians to look like they are doing something whilst actually not making any difference to the underlying problem of low income households and lack of economic development.
Losing this significant green space in order to build 168 houses, most of which will be sold to second home owners, does not make sense. It will not enable growth for Tenby, just more empty houses in the winter.
I do believe that Tenby only has a prosperous future if it can build on its unique attributes, which includes the attraction of tourists to enjoy the ambiance of open green spaces and rurality close to the seaside. A lot of the open land around Tenby has already been defaced and ruined by pylons and huge wind turbines.
Tenby is special and could be a world class resort if there was vision and sensible nurturing of what is already developed. This land is irreplaceable, a site which is teeming with rare wildlife and which is providing useful flood prevention run off land.
Let’s keep our green spaces and build sensibly in small developments, which would enhance rather than destroy the attractiveness of the town.
G. M. Davies,
Tenby.
