A campaign has been launched this week urging Pembrokeshire County Council to allow on-duty carers' cars to be exempt from current parking restrictions in the town.
Since the local authority took over civil parking enforcement in February, many carers have received parking fines while they have been on calls.
Concerned about their plight, Annie Bradforth, daughter-in-law of well-known Tenby artist Eric, who has carers call three times a day to his home in Trafalgar Road, has now launched a petition calling for restrictions to be waived for them while they are at work.
"Many elderly and disabled Tenby people are cared for in their homes and it takes a small army of carers to tend them," explained Annie.
"Pembrokeshire County Council will not allow carers exemption from car parking restrictions so as a result the carers' difficult job is made intolerable," she explained.
"Finding legal parking places often makes carers late getting to their clients, many of whom are vulnerable and needy people. And this situation is likely to become impossible during the holiday season."
Annie is now issuing petitions to shops and businesses whereby people can sign and show their support to the carers.
"We do not encourage carers to abuse this privilege to park dangerously or in a way that may hinder the passage of pedestrians and other road users, but we recognise their need to service clients quickly and efficiently at all times of the day and night," she continued.
"One carer told me she had received four tickets in one day. The carers, on their small wages, have to pay their own parking tickets.
"This is not the behaviour of a civilised society. Each one of us owes a debt of gratitude to the carers looking after Tenby's elderly and vulnerable people."
Petitions are available for signing at a number of shops and businesses in Tenby.
