The young Borderers maintained their winnowing sequence in a close encounter with arch rivals Narberth. Whitland had a lead of three points at the interval courtesy of a penalty by centre James Stephenson. The visitors extended the lead after the break with a smartly taken drop-goal by outside-half Jonathan Thomas and a long distance penalty kick by James Stephenson to complete the scoring for the afternoon. The Otters came close to scoring a try twice in the first half after good work by the pack, but on each occasion, were unable to ground the ball over the line. Narberth team manager Paul Done was rather dejected after the match. Reflecting on the game, he said: "We are still gutted about the result, but the lads fronted up really well. The Whitland team did not look like breaking Narberth's 'Iron Curtain' defence. "In the second half, the Narberth team attacked superbly, but it wasn't to be our day. Although cracks appeared in the Whitland defence, we were just not clinical enough to polish them off. "We cannot be too disheartened by this performance and are genuinely looking forward to the re-match at Whitland." Whitland's coach Roy Newton said: "This was a very good game between two excellent sides who were both unbeaten at the start of the match. "Both teams had good packs and two cracking back rows. It was a game of nip and tuck and, although it was a local derby, it was played competitively and in good spirit. "In the end the Whitland team came out on top, which reflected the slight edge that we had as the game proceeded".
